TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. S. SCHULTZ, of' Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented anew.
. and useful Fire-Guard; and I hereby declare' the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of thisl specification.
My invention relates to an improved construction ot the wire screen or guard which is hung in front of an open fireplace to prevent theclothes of women and children catching fire, anduly improved guard is so constructed as not to interfere with the acts of kindling and lattention to the fire. Itis also so constructed as to be adjustable vertically with respect to the grate.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective view of my `guard or fender.
A is the body ofthe screen or guard, Formed of wire in the usual way, but having a large central opening.
A', which is closed by a flap or door, B, hinged or hung to the upper edge of the said opening, and furnished with a handle, 6, at its lower end. When it is desired to'chaige or otherwise manipulate the re, the door B is held open by a hook, C, secured to the upper part of the guard. On withdrawal of the said hook the ap drops to and remain-s in its closed position until again lifted. The hooksD, by which the guard is fastened to the grate, have screw-threaded shanks d, provided with hand-nuts E. Thesaid shanks traverse clips F, which gru-sp and are capable of sliding up and down upon the vertical wires of the guard, so that by slnckingthe nuts the guard is liberated'for vertical adjustment with respect to the grate, and is again secured in place by tightening of the nuts. v
The door and body may be so foimed'or hinged relatively to each other, as to enable the former to stand in the open as well as in the closed position, by its weight simply. Itbeing no longer necessary to remove thcguard from the fire, for the purpose of making up the latter, the frequent sooting and scorching the hands of the operator, and the soiling of floors, carpets, Ste., and loss of time in shifting the guard are avoided.
This construction enables the hooks ,to be recurved, as in the illustration, so as to securely grasp the gratebar, and to be incapable of removal, save by nnscrewing ofthe nuts.
I claim herein as new, and of my inveutionl.` The provision in a {ire-guard of the door or Hap B, as andfor the purpose set forth. 2. The arrangement of adjustable hooks D with the nuts E and clips F, for the object explained. Iu`testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
