WILLIS H. JORDAN, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO COLONIAL SCALE COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION 0F MAINE.
LlFTlNG-lVIACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 712,072, dated October 28, 1902.
Application filed July 9,1901` Serial No. 67,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may oon/cern: Y
Be it known that I, WILLIS H. JORDAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Coin-Controlled Lifting-Machines, of which the following is a description suiiiciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a frontelevation of a coin-operated Weighing-scale, showing my improved lifting device; and Fig. 2, a vertical section through the lifting-'handle and contiguous parts.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both gures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to an attachment for coin-controlled weighing-scales whereby lifting strain maybe indicated in the same dial as is the weight and by the same weighing mechanism.
This present invention is designed particularly as an improvementon the device shown in my application for United States Letters Patent,SerialNo.44,471,ledJanuary23,l90l.
In carrying out my inventionI make use of means which will be readily understood by those conversant with such matters from the' following explanation.
In the drawings, A respesents'the body orl casing of the weighing-machine, which consists of a hollow shaft surmounted by a dial B, provided with index f. Above this is the coin-slot g. At the base of the column is the scale-platform h. This is mounted on the lbalance-levers and operates the coin-released spring balance weighing mechanism contained in the body or column and actuating the index f in the usual manner. As these parts are allof ordinary construction, it is not deemed essential to illustrate or describe the same in detail, as they have no direct bearing on my present invention, which is applicable for use with any weighing-machine of this class.
In lugs k on the base of the column A is litted to rotate a vertical rod 7', carrying a frame C, of any ornamental design, on the outer edge of which is formed a vertical tube m. As thus arranged this frame may be swung horizontally back against the column-base or out overthe platform h.
Proj ectiug laterally from the frame-tube m there is a hollow foot o, and fitted to slide vertically within said tube there is a liftingtube s, provided adjacent its lower end with a slot y, which registers with the inner end of said foot o.' In this foot is pivoted to swing vertically aleve1"w,with a downwardly-turned..
nose disposed in position to be thrown into contact with platform h, as hereinafter delscribed. The inner end of this lever projects through the slot y of tube s and between two pins ,e z, passing through said tube, the distance between these pins being sufficient to Formed integral with or secured to the frame of the platform h and projecting horizontally therefrom respectively at opposite sides there are wings or foot-plates ft' t'.
In the use of my invention the scale is employed for weighin g persons or articles on thev platform h in the usual manner, the balance mechanism being released by the insertion of coin in chute g. As this is common and well known to all versedin the art, its particular description is deemed unnecessary. When it is desired to test the lifting strength, he steps astride the platform h, his feet resting, respectively, in the wings t t. i The frameC is swung forward until the lever-nose is over the platform. The handle p is adjusted at the convenient height by means of its threaded ends. Lifting strain being applied to the handles, the scale mechanism having been previously released by the insertion of a coin in chute g,
IOO
the nose a: of lever fw is driven'against platform h as lifter-tube s is thus drawn upward. The platform 7l is thereby depressed in. the same manner as when Weight is applied thereto, and the amount in pounds will be indicated on dial B, as will be evident to those conversant with such matters Without a more eX- plicit description.
It Will he seen that by providing the wings i for operator to stand on it is not necessary to fasten the mechanism to the floor, and the strain on the frame is greatly relieved. Moreover, by this means l thereby avoid the necessity of deducting the weight of person operating the device from the indicated lift, as is necessary when the operator stands on the scale-platform, or else the providing of mechanism for compensating for this weight would he necessary.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim isl. A scale mechanism provided with a platform in combination With a lifting-handle adjustahle relative to said platform and a lever operated by movements of said handle and adapted to be engaged With said platform, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A platform-scale; Wings, i, vl, secured to the hase thereof and a lever pivotally connected with the scale-body and adapted to depress the scale-platform in response to lifting force applied.
3. In a device of the character described, the platform, h, the swinging frame, C, the lever, w, and devices for throwing an arm of said lever into contact with said platform.
4. The spring scale-balance, its platform, casing and its index in combination with the swinging frame; the vertically-movable lifting-handle, and the lever, w, operated by movements of said handle.
