SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,226, dated July 7, 1903 Application led August 9, 1902. Serial No. 119,076. (No model.)

Be it known thatI I, JESSE LINES, a citizen, of the United States, residing at Sabetha, in
the county of Nemaha and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scales, of which the following is a Specification.
This invention relates to scales; and the object thereof is to provide a simple, durable, and efficient construction of scale mechanism provided with a computing attachment which will indicate the total price to be paid for various articles at a stipulated amount per weight unit.
In order to appreciate the novel details of construction embodied in this device, reference should be had to the accompanying` drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a scale constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal view through the same, showing a supplemental weight attached to the scale-beam. Fig. 3 is an end elevation on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a front View of the scales.
The reference-numeral 1 designates the casing of the scales, having sides and top, but open at each end, and provided at its bottom with a protruding extension or platform 2. This casing forms a support for the scale mechanism, to be referred to hereinafter. Interposed between the sides of the casing and pivoted intermediate its ends, but at one end of the casing, is the scalebeam 3, which is horizontally arranged, but adapted to swing on a pivot 4. Y
Secured to the shortest end ofthe beam 3 and to one side of the fulcrum is a pivoted standard 5 of the scale-platform 6. The lower end of the standard 5 is fastened pivotally to an approximately transverse link 7, carried bya rock-shaft S, which is supported by a casing 1. The end of the beam 3 opposite to that on which the platform is secured eX- tends through the entire length of the casing 1 and terminates in a hooked end 9, having an opening 10 in the extremity thereof, into which the hooked end of a weight-Securing device 11 maybe secured, as will be explained hereinafter.
Secured to and resting on the platform 2 is a dash-pot 12, in which is a suitable liquid,
preferably oil, and vertically reciprocating in this dash-pot is a pistonV 155, secured to the long arm of the Scale-beam by a stem o r rod 14.
A pendulum 15 is secured between the side walls of the casing 1 by suitable journal 1G. This pendulum consists of two downwardlyprojecting parallel bars 17 and 18, having weighted ends 19 and 20,which terminate near the bottom of the casing. The pendulum is secured to the beam 3 at a point adjacent the platform 6 on the short arm of the beam by a rod 21,which is pivoted to the pendulum and rigidly connected to an upwardly-projecting short arm 22, pivotally fastened to the short arm of the beam 3. The top of the casing is cut away, as at 23, to permit of a play of the pendulum, the top of the pendulum extending over one side of the casing and carrying a dependingrigidindicatororhand 24. Thishand is provided with a plurality of notches, whereby fingers 25 are formed, and each iinger has printed, painted, or impressed thereon a suitable character, preferably a numeral, to desiga nate the price. Leading from the fingers in parallel arcs are rows of numerals 2G. Each row is arranged in a predetermined series, which are'provided for the purpose of designating the product obtained by multiplying the number of pounds by the price per pound. Each series has its corresponding numeral in radial alinement with the number of the other series, so that each `finger will point to a corresponding number throughout the scale. For instance, the first finger can be provided with the numeral 4, the next 5, the succeed; ing one 6, and so on.
Vhen it is desired to weigh anything, the mass is placed upon the platform, causing the standard 5 to be depressed, carrying the short arm of the beam downward and the long arm upward, and thereby offering resistance to the liquid in a dash-pot 12. At the same time the arm 22 will be moved in the direction of the platform 6, thereby drawing the pendulum 15 away from the dash-pot, so that the pointer will be moved in an arc parallel with the series of numerals at the side of the casing. At the lower extremity of the arm 24 and par-A allel to the arcs scribed thereon is a scale 26, denoting the number of pounds. Thus if the mass to be weighed is equivalent to four pounds the end of the pointer 24 will point to the numeral 4, and at live cents a pound the linger 25 opposite the numeral 5 on theVY pointer would rest adjacent the second series from the top and opposite the numeral 20, indicating the sum-total to be twenty cents. At four cents a pound the operator need only glance at the line above, where the product would be indicated at 16. If the price was six cents a pound, it will be equally apparent that the total would be twenty-four. In actual practice the scale will only be adjusted to weigh up to ten pounds without the addition of weights. On the end of the scalebeam, however, the weight-holding device ll can be attached if more than ten pounds is to be weighed, and a weight corresponding to the weights now in use in the ordinary platform scales can be placed on this weightholding device and the process of weighing can be proceeded with as before described.
It will of course be apparent that .I may construct the pointer or arm with any number of fingers and have a corresponding number of the series of numerals, if desired. As
soon as the weight is taken from the platform the weighted arms of the pendulum will bring the platform to its normal position.
Of course it will be understood that I have shown the preferred form of my invention in the accompanying drawings; but I reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as may suggest themselves from time to time and come within the scopeY of the following claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new is- In a weighing-scale the combination with a supporting frame or casingfof a dash-pot secured thereto and containing liquid, of a pis; ton-rod and piston, a pivote-d scale-beam secured to the piston-rod, said beam being arranged horizontally of the frame, a platform carried by the scale-beam on the end oppo site to which the piston is attached, a rockshaft below the scale-beam, a link secured to the rock-shaft and supporting the platform, a weighted pendulum pivotally secured to the casingY and straddlingl the scale-beam, said pendulum being connected to the beam, and a pointer formed on the upper extremity of the pendulum to indicate the weight wh en the scale-beam is actuated.
