UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MANANDER M. JOHNSON, OF CLAY CENTER, NEBRASKA.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. l712,071, dated October 28, 1902.
Application iiled June 12, 1902. Serial No. 111,337. (No model.) Y
To all whom it 17m/y concern:
Be it known that I, MANANDER M. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clay Center, in the county of Clay and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to lamps, and particularly to oil-burning lamps of the character designed more especially for use in connection with incubators.
The object of the invention is to provide a lamp of this character in which provision is made for keeping the oil-font cool and permitting of the escapeof any gases generated therein, thereby obviating all liability of the gases being generated and confined tO such an extent as to cause an explosion.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly defined in the appended claim.
The figure of the drawing represents a central vertical section of alamp embodying my invention.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l represents a metallic bowl or font provided in its top with a central opening 2, and 3 is an annular water reservoir superposed upon said bowl and having a central tube 4 coinciding with said Opening. A collar 5, mounted upon the reservoir, is threaded to receive the burner 6, which maybe of any ordinary construction. The reservoir is su pplied with water and forms a jacket inclosing the burner to keep the bowl cool and reduce to a minimum the amount of gas generated from the heat of the lamp.
Extending upwardly through the bottom of the font and terminating adjacent t the cOllar 5 is an air-tube 7, through which air is admitted tO further cool the burner. This air discharges through a vent formed by a handle 8, which is provided with the tubular legs 9 and 10, one communicating with the font and the other with lthe water-jacket. By this means the gas generated in the font is allowed to discharge, and all vapor formed in the water-jacket is also allowed to pass off. The tubes 9 and 10 further form funnels through which the oil-reservoir and jacket may be conveniently lled.
It will be seen that owing to the fact that the font is kept cool the formation of gas is reduced to the minimum, and that what little gas that is permitted to form is carried off through ther Vent by the air from tube 7, thereby' obvi'ating all liability of an eXplosion. v
I-Iaving thus described my invention, wha I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A lamp, comprising a bowl provided with an Opening in its top, a burner-supporting tube rising from said opening, a water-reservoir superposed upon the bowl and surrounding said burner-supporting tube, an air-supply tube leading to the interior of the burnersupporting tube, and a handle having tubular legs forming vents and funnels, one communicating with the bowl and the other with the water reservoir, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
MANANDER M. JOHNSON.
