f Beit known that we, HENRY G. VOIGHT and WILLIAM E. PARKER, citizens of the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Front Door Cylinder1 Locks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in front-door cylinder-locks; and the main object of our improvement is to provide means for controlling the latch-bolt locking mechanism by means of the key on the outside of the door in addition to its control by a thumbturn on the inside of the door.V
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a front elevation of our improvement with so much of an ordinary cylinder lock and latch as is necessary to show the connection therewith, the same being viewed from the outside of the door, the cap-plate of the lock-case being removed, the wing of the key-hub being left in its proper position, and the slide for holding the cylinder-lock case shown in section. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same with the parts in the position given them by forcing the latch-bolt back with the key. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the lock, partly in plan view, on the line w a; of Fig. l.
A designates the lock-case, and B its capplate. These are provided with any ordinary means for receiving and holding the cylindrical case C of any ordinary cylinder-lockas, for example, the forked slide 4 and its set` screw -in connection with the holes or sockets on the respective broad sides of the case, either of which may receive the cylindrical case C of the lock, according to which of the said broad sides is presented toward the outside of the door as the latch-bolt D is reversed for a right or a left hand door.v In Figs. 1 and 2 the cap-plate B is the part that would hold the case C, whichcap-plateis removed; but we have shown the wing 6 of the key-hub of the cylinder-lock in its proper position, the same as if the cap-plate and case C had not been removed.l ,i
The ordinary beveled latch-bolt D is provided with the usual spring 7 for forcing it outwardly and with any ordinary knob-operated devices for throwing the latch-bolt back by means of the door-knobs. Such devices being old and well known we have only shown the upper end of the lever 8, that is operated by the door-knob to withdraw the latch-bolt. A vertically-moving slide 9 is arranged in the case to move down back of the plate 10 on the inner end of the latch-bolt to positively lock the latch-bolt against being forced inwardly. In connection with the said slide is a thumb-turn hub 11, having an arm 12, that engages a notch 13 in the slide for moving the said slide up or down to engage o`r disengage the rear end of the latchbolt. This hub is held in its two positions by means of the spring 14 bearing on an angular portion of the hub. Such a slide and thumb-turn on the inside of the door for operating the said slide, as thus far specifically described, is Aold and of itself not claimed herein. We provide the hub of this thumbturn with a second wing l5 for enabling the locking-slide 9 to be withdrawn from the position shown in Fig. 1 by means of the keyhub wing 6 when operated by a key from the outside. We accomplish this by means of the swinging arm 16, pivoted to the lock-case on the pin 17, with its outer end in position to engage the saidv second wing l5 of the thumb-turn hub 11. This swinging arm 16 is provided with a projection 19, which when in the position shown in Fig. l will be engaged by the wing 6 of the key-hub as the said hub is rotated by the key from the outside and just in advance of the engagement of the said wing with the ordinary lever 2O for drawing back the latch-bolt, so that the slide 9 is withdrawn by the mere act of forcing back the latch-bolt for unlocking the door in the ordinary manner. The slide 9 may be forced down into its locking position, as shown in Fig. 1, by the thumb-turn hub 11, the handle thereof being on the inside of the door, or when in the position shown in Fig. 2 by means of the key on the outside of 95 IOO the upper end of the said slide, which extension lies in the path of the said Wing 6 when thus rotated. While the slide 9 and its thu mb-turn hub are old, the said slide heretofore has not been provided with an extension for coming into the path of the Wing of the key-hub, so as to operate it for locking the latch by means of the regular key from the outside of the door. This enables one in leaving the house to lock the latch-bolt from the outside after the door is closed.
It is apparent that some changes from the specific construction herein disclosed may be made, and therefore we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise form of construction shown and described, but desire the liberty to vmake such changes in Working our invention as may fairly come within the spirit and scope 0E the same.
We claim as our inventionl. In a front-door lock, the combination of a cylinder-lock having the key-hub Wing,With the latch-bolt, the locking-slide for locking the latch-bolt, a tl1umb-turn for actuating the said locking-slide, and mechanism operated by the said key-hub wing for Withdrawing the said locking-slide from the latch in the act of unlocking the door, substantially as described.
2. In a front-door lock, the combination of the latch-bolt with the locking-slide for locking the said latch-bolt, the said slide having an extension in the path of the key-Wing of the cylinder-lock, and the said lock and Wing for acting on the said extension for operating the said slide to lock the latch-bolt by the key from the outside of the door, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the latch-bolt with the cylinder-lock and connecting mechanism, the locking-slide for locking the said latchbolt, and connecting mechanism between the said slide and the key-hub wing of the said lock for withdrawing the locking-slide from the outside of the door by means of the key to the said cylinder-lock in the act of unlocking the door, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the latch-bolt with means for operating the said bolt, the locking-slide for locking the said latch-bolt in its extended position, the thumb-turn hub having an arm for operating the said slide and a second arm for being actuated, a swinging arm having a part in the path of the wing of the cylinder-lock and a part engaging the said second Wing of the thumb-turn hub, and a cylinder-lock having a wing to operate the said swinging arm and through the said arm to Withdraw the locking-slide, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the latch-bolt with the cylinde1lock,and connecting mechanism, and a locking-slide for locking the said latchbolt, the said slide being located with reference to the said cylinder-lock for being actuated by the key When the key is placed in the hub of the said cylinder-lock from the outside to force the said slide into its position for locking the said latch-bolt, substantially as described.
6. The combination of the latch-bolt with the cylinder-lock, and its connecting mechanism, a locking-slide for locking the said latch-bolt, the said locking-slide being located in the combination for being actuated by the key when the said key is placed in the hub of said cylinder-lock from the outside of the door, and a thumb-turn on the inside of the door for actuating the said slide from the inside, when desired,substantially as described.
