TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:

Bo it known that I, JOHN MALNIGHT, of Grass Lake, in the county ot' Jackson, and'in the State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a System of Cutting Ladies Dresses; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This model and scale is drawn three times reduced from its natural size, as follows: Thirty-six inch breast, twenty-four waist, fifteen and a half inch back, length from top of neck to-bottom of waist; fourteen inch width of back, sixteen inch width'of breast from side to side, and seven and ahalf inch length of side body-seam.

Take inch tapc and apply to joint of neck, and bring it down to bottom of waist, fifteen and a half inches;

bring it down to bottom of waist or hip, seven and a half inches;A fourth, also across the breast, sixteen inches; fth, and also round the waist, twenty-four inches.

second, apply tape close up under the arm, third, from size across the back to size, fourteen inches; apply tape below the arm around the chest, thirty-siri inches,

v Select the scale corresponding with the breast measure. (The First, draw lineA down to B, and mark length of back, say fifteen and a half inches, or whatever it will be; then draw line across from A to C, that is, one-half of the breast measure, eighteen inches, and also from B to 1), and also draw line down from C to D. Now the outsideliues are complet-ed. aNext, then, apply tape at B, and mark upon line A length of side body-seam, say seven and a half inches, and the same also vfrom D to F, and draw line across from F to E; then take scale corresponding with breast measure and go out on top from Ato G, one division, and in one division at bottom of waist," from B to H, and draw line down from G, as represented on diagram; then apply scale from E to X on line E, six and a half divisions, make a dot, then lay on tape measure and mark width of back, say seven inches. If the width of backvand the six and a half divisions do not agree, divide the difference and mark three 'and a half divisions, from I to K, also up from I to M, four divisions; the same up from K to L, and across top from L to M, three and a half divisions, and finish the size square, as represented on diagram, Then mark' in from M to P, one and a quarter division; also in from I ou4 centre line, and draw line down from N to O. Next mark down from top of back, one-quarter division, in line G, and across to your righty from G, two divisions, and up from two and a quarter divisions, and from top of back, as represented. Next go down from P to star, one'aud three-quarter division, and down at the centre, a half division; and from back size go back from O to R, two and a half divisions; and from side seam, in consequence of going down a half division at bottom o f size, the same must be added vat the bottom of Waist, vNext, then,l allow in front ofthe half of breast measure one and alhalf division, and draw down line S; go in ontop of line S to C, two divisions, and down from C a half division make a mark, and go down on line S three and u half divisions, and up at I one and a'half to star, and draw shoulder line. Now form-neck, shoulder, scam, and size. Allow at line S, at the bottom of front of waist, one div taste, and pattern is-finishcd. I

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new,

The within-described system of cutting dresses,` as set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing invention, I have hereunto sot my hand and seal this 10th day of May, 1867.
