Description

Patented Oct. 2|, I902. G. HIBSCHELL.
BEER STOPPER No. 7II,767.
(Application filed July 15, 1902.)
(No Modal.)
Zia/ I, deafi'zwkelk v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE HIRSCHELL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BEER-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 711,767, dated October 21, 1902.
Application filed July 15,1902. Serial No. 115,647. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, GEORGE HIRSCHELL, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Beer-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in bottle-stoppers, and relates more particularly to stoppers for beerbottles and bottles for like malt liquors.
The object of thepresent invention is to provide a bottle with a stopper that will antomatically close, forming a hermetical seal that will prevent ,the carbonic-acid gas from escaping, therebypreserving the liquor after the bottle has been once opened.
My invention further aims to provide a bottle-stopper that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, andarrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of referenceindicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved stopper secured in the neck of a bottle, the latter being illustrated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the stopper with the sealingshutter removed therefrom. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the sealing-shutter.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the neck of the bottle, in which is secured the cylindrical portion 2 of the stopper, having a central opening 3 formed therein, said cylindrical body portion carrying an enlarged head 4, through which the central opening 3 extends, this head 4 having formed therein a slot 5, in which is pivotally secured at 6 the sealing-shutter 7, which is adapted to snugly fit in the slot 5. The said sealingshutter 7 carries a lip 8, which is adapted tofit over the central opening 3 of the stopper, this sealing shutter also carrying thumbpiece 9, which is formed integral therewith, forming the operating-handle, to which is socured the spiral spring 10, and the other end of said spring is secured at 11 to the enlarged head 4 of the stopper. The spring 10 compresses the handle outwardly and the lip 8 inwardly, thereby retaining the bottle normally closed, and when it is desired to open the same the thumb-piece forming the handle is slightly depressed, permitting the fluid to be taken from the bottle in the ordinary manner, and as soon as the thumb-piece or handle is released the bottle will again automatically close.
It will be noted that various changesmay be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a bottle, the combination of a head having a slot formed therein, a shutter pivotally secured in said head and operating in said slot, and a spring to normally retain said shutter in a closed position, substantially as described.
2. In a bottle-stopper, the combination of a cylindrical body portion having a central opening therein extending into the neck of the bottle, an enlarged head formed integral with said cylindrical body portion having formed therein a slot, a shutter pivotally secured in said slot, a handle extending from said shutter, and a spring to normally retain said shutter over the openingformed in the stopper, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof-I aflix my'signature in the presence of two witnesses;
GEORGE HIRSCHELL. Witnesses:
JOHN NOLAND, E. E. POTTER.
