Be it known that I, FRED W. TOBEY, a citizen of the United States, residingat Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Card-Filing Cases, of whichthe following is a specification.

This invention relates to a card-filing tray or box which may be used either singly or which may be used in a case or frame supporting a plurality of said trays.

The invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and adjustment of parts hereinafter described.

The objects of my invention are to furnish in combination with a card-filing tray a block or follower which is held in a position perpendicular to the bottom of the box and which is locked in that position normally, but which 7 can be readily unlocked in order to move said follower in either direction; second, to form a cheap and efficient locking'device for the follower. These objects I accomplish by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings; in which- Figure 1 shows a top perspective of a single box or tray constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 shows a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the tray at one side of the longitudinal rod which supports the locking device.

A represents the tray or box, constructed in any suitable form. In the bottom of the tray there is a groove or slot, and extendinglengthwise of the slot is the rod E. The upper surface of this rod is preferably in the same plane as the upper surface of the bottom of the tray.

through the lever C and may be riveted down so as to retain the lever in position. The lever C is therefore fulcrumed uponthemetal strip D, as shown in Fig. 2. The perpendicular portion of the strip D is provided with an opening through which'passes the rod E, the opening being of sufficient size to allow the strip D to slide readily thereon. The lower end of the lever C is also provided with an opening through which passes the rod E. The lever C extends upward to near the top of the follower B and is provided with a spring F, the function of the spring F being to hold the lever C in its normal position, which normal position is shown in Fig. 2. The opening in the lower end of the leverC is of sufficient size to allow the rod E to pass freely through when the lever C is thrown out of normal position, as hereinafter described. When the 7 lever C is in its normal position, it binds upon the rod E and locks the follower, so that it cannot be readily moved in either direction.

In the example of my invention shown in the drawings I have shown a coiled spring F; but it will be evident that any form of spring may be used.

The operation of my invention is as follows: The follower and lever being in normal position, as shown in Fig. 2, are in a locked position, and in order to move the fol lower in either direction the upper end of the lever C and the upper part of the follower B are grasped between the thumb and finger and the upper end of the lever C brought in contact with the follower. This throws the lower end of the lever substantially parallel with the perpendicular portion of D. The lever then releases its hold upon the rod E and the follower may be moved readily in go either direction.

Instead of using a screw for the purpose of attaching D to the follower a'nail or pin may be used.

Having thus described my invention, what 5 I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a tray and a rod therein, of a follower having a slot in its lower edge opposite said rod, an angle-strip having two arms, the horizontal arm being secured to one wall of said slot and projecting beyond one side of said follower, and the vertical arm having an opening therein through which said rod passes, and a lockinglever fulcrumed to the projecting end of said horizontal arm and having an opening therein through which said rod passes.

2. The combination with a tray and a 10ngitndinally-extending rod therein, of a follower having an inverted- U -shaped slot in its lower edge opposite said rod, an angle-strip having two arms, the horizontal arm being secured to the upper wall of said slot and projecting beyond one side of said follower and the vertical arm having an opening therein through which said rod passes, a locking-lever fulcrumed to the projecting end of said horizontal arm and having an opening therein through which said rod passes, and a spring acting upon said lever for normally maintaining the walls of the opening therein in looking engagement with said rod.

3. The combination with a tray having a longitudinally-extending slot or groove therein, and a rod located in said groove, of a follower having an inverted-U -shaped slot in its lower edge opposite said rod and having a socket in its rear face, an angle-strip having two arms, the horizontal arm being secured to the upper wall of said slot and projecting beyond one side of said follower, and the vertical arm projecting down into the slot or groove in said tray and having an opening therein through which said rod passes, a locking-lever fulcrumed to the projecting end of said horizontal arm having an opening therein through which said rod passes, and a spring seated in the socket in said follower and acting upon said lever for normally main taining the walls of the slot in said lever in looking engagement with said rod.
