To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOGAN L. MALLARD, a
citizen of the United States, residing at At-,
lanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stock-Feed Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
Thisinvention relates to stock-feed cutters,
and has for its object to provide an improved 1o cutter of the character described which will be simple, durable, and inexpensive in construction and efficient in operation; and it consists in the features and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims following the description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved feed-cutter, showing the same in operative position. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the convertible feed-table and cover viewed from the under side; and Figs. 5 and 6 are transverse sectional views of the knife, taken, respectively, through the cutting portions and shank of the knife.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a rectangular box of any suitable size, which constitutes both a support for the cutting apparatus and a receptacle for the cut feed. Approximately one-half of the upper part of the box is closed by a fixed cover 2, which may be conveniently mailed or screwed to the upper edges of the box. Arranged parallel with the inner edge of the cover 2 is a strip or bar 3, and fixed to the under sides of the cover 2 and bar 8 are blocks or battens 4E and 5, through which loosely passes an adj usti'ng-screw 6, the headed end 7 of the screw being disposed on the outer side of the bar in order that it may be con- 5 veniently engaged by a wrench. On the inner threaded end 8 of the screw is arranged a nut 9, one of the flat faces of which bears against the under side of the cover 2 and is thereby prevented from turning. By turning the screw in the proper direction thebar 3 can be adjusted toward and from the edge of the cover 2 in an obvious manner, so as to regulate the space or the size of the slot between said edge of the cover and the bar. The cover 2 and bar 3 constitute a platform or table .55 over which is fed the feed to be cut.
Formed in theblocks or battens L and 5 are two bolt-holes 10, which are in alinement with each other and are adapted to loosely receive a pivot-bolt 11.
The numeral 12 indicates a knife consisting of a thin fiat blade having a double cutting edge 13-that is to say, the cutting edge of the knife is ground on both sides, so that it will be beveled from the opposite sides toward the cutter. The knife is preferably broadest at its pivoted end and gradually diminishes in width toward its free or handle end. The shank 14 ofthe knife between the cutting odge lb and its; handle 15 is beveled on its opposite under sides, as indicated at 16 and for the purpose hereinafter explained. A perforation 17 is formed in the knife in close proximity to its fixed end and adjacent to the back of the knife or that edge which is opposed to thecutting edge, and through said perforation extends the pivot-bolt 11, which is loosely inserted in the bolt-holes 10 in the blocks 4 and 5. By pivoting the knife in the manner described its cutting edge is disposed 8o eccentrically to its fulcrum,so that when the knife is oscillated about the pivot-bolt as a center the knife will act on the feed with a shearing-or drawing action and will thus reduce the resistance offered by the feed to the 8 5 cutting action of the knife to a minimum.
Fixed to the upper edge of one side of the box is a knife-guide comprising a metallic bracket 18, which is secured by screws 19 to the side of the box and provided at its ends with laterally-projecting lugs 20 and2l, that project over the edges of the cover2 andbar 3 and are attach ed thereto by screws 22. Projecting upward from the bracket 18 between the lugs 20 and 21 are two integral fingers 24:, 5 the adjacent edges of which slightly diverge from one another from the bottom of said fingers to the top thereof, and said fingers are curved toward the center of the box, said cur- .vature being formed on the arc described by the shank of the knife during the operation of the latter. cut the feed then its shank 14 passes between the fingers 24, and the latter operate to guide the knife, whereby the latter is prevented from coming in contact with the edges of the cover 2 or bar 3 and from marring the latter or dulling the edge of the knife. By beveling the under side of the shank 14, as described, abrasion of the guide or the knife is avoided.
The numeral 25 indicates a combined feedtable and cover for the box, consisting of a lid of the proper size to cover the aperture 26 in the top of the box, and is provided on its under side with two strips or bars 27, that are fixed to the lid by any suitable means and project beyond one sideor edge of the latter, as shown. Two slots or mortises 28 are formed-in the upper edge of one end of the box immediately beneath the cover 2, said mortises being approximately of the same size and shape as the bars or strips 27 in crosssection. When the cutter is to be used, the projecting ends of the strips are fitted in the mortises and support the cover in the position shown, the cover then forming a feed- When the device is not in use, however, the cover 25 is fitted over the aperture 26, the projecting ends of the strips 27 then resting underneath the platform 2 3, and said cover may then be locked in place by a padlock, a hasp 29 being attached to the upper side of said cover and a staple 30 to the end of the box for the purpose.
The operation of my improved feed-cutter will be readily understood. The feed to be cut is placed on the table and platform and is pushed forward by the left hand of the operator under the knife, while with his right hand he oscillates the knife. As the feed is severed by the knife it is fed forward with a step-by-step movement, the stock operating to eject the cut feed through the aperture 26 into the box. By making the knife thin and grinding on both sides of the cutting edge it will retain its initial cutting qualities for a long period. Owing to the length of the exposed edge of the knife and the attendant leverage, larger bundles of feed may be out than can commonly be cut by machines of thistype. When the machine is not in use, the bolt 11 is Withdrawn, and the knife can then be stored in the box and the cover locked in place thereon, thereby protecting the knife from moisture and preventing meddlesome persons from injuring themselves with the knife.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a stock-feed cutter, the combination with a box provided with a slotted platform on top thereof and coveringsubstantially onehalf of the box, of a cover and feed-table for closing the other half of said box and provided with means for locking it to the box, said cover being provided on its under side with strips projecting beyond the inner edge of the cover and adapted to be inserted in mortises formed in the end of the box and support said .cover in the same horizontal plane as the said platform to form a feed-table, and an oscillating knife removably pivoted at one end in the said slot, substantially as described.
2. In a stock-feed cutter, the combination with a box provided with a permanent cover covering approximately one-half of the top of the box, of a strip or bar arranged parallel to the inner edge of the cover, means for adjusting said strip or bar toward and from said cover, and an oscillating knife pivoted at one end between said bar or strip and the cover, substantially as described.
