Be it known that l, BERITA BARNETT, inarried woman, a subject of t-he King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at (Jraighton lIouse, 17 Elgin Crescent, London, l/V.,'Eng land, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Bells, (for which I have made application for Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 18,352, and dated the 13th day of September, 1901,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in smut-catchers for gas-brackets and other gasfittings; and its object is to construct a smutcatcher which can be readily applied to gasbrackets whereon globes or chimneys of different heights are employed and in which the smut-catching plate or screen can be readily removed for cleaning purposes.

The invention consists of a base-plate which is passed over the gas-burner and from which upwardly-projecting arms extend capable of being ben't into any desired position, which arms carry at their upper end a ring or the like, upon which the removable plate orsmutcatcher itself rests, the arms being formed so as to admit of the upper parts thereof being readily broken olf when so desired to adapt the device for use upon gas-brackets employing globes or chimneys of varying heights.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis an elevation of the smut-catcher as applied to a gas bracket, the ordinary globe being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, while Figs. 3 and et are detail views of the upper ends of the supportingarms. Fig 5 is a sectional detail.

In carrying the invention into effect a metal or other base-plate is provided having a central hole therein, which is screw-threaded to tit over the ordinary gas-burner c under the ordinary globe-holderfof the gas-bracket, and this plate is provided with two, three, or more short arms of uniform length, which project outwardly from the base-plate. At

the end of these short arms two, three, or more branches b of equal length project upwardly, such arms being provided at their upper ends with a number of projecting knobs, or the arms themselves may be bent to forni projecting ridges at equal distances apart.

A metal or other ring d, perforated with small holes, rests upon the outermost of the projecting knobs or ridges of the upwardlyextending arms b, and upon this ring or upper support the smut-catcher c itself is carried, this smut-catcher being provided in the form of a metal or other disk of either convex or fiat formation, and such disk may be suitably plated, enameled, or otherwise treated when so desired. The object of the ring CZ is to keep the branches b firmly in position whenthe plate c is removed for cleaning purposes.

The smut-catcher c has a number of holes therein corresponding with the holes in the ring d, which supports the same, such holes being sufficiently large to admit of the upper ends of the projecting branches b to pass easily therethrough. The ordinary globe a is carried by the globe-holder f, which is also of the usual form, and the projecting arms b of the smut-catcher pass upwardly throughy the globe and extend out at the top thereof to a distance of about an inch from the upper edge of the same.

As shown in Fig. 3, the arms b are provided with projecting ridges g, such ridges g being arranged on each of the arms, preferably at equal distances from each other, so that parts of such arms may be broken away, thus allowing the ring d to be always maintained at a suitable distance from the upper edge of the globe a, so as not to impede the draft. By this means the smut-catcher is always maintained at any desired height above the globe. The pieces of these arms are broken away, preferably immediately beneath any one of the series of the projecting ridges thereon, so as to leave a projecting part on each branch of equal length which will pass through the holes in the ring and in the disk or plate which vforms the smut-catcher c. A modied form of the supporting-arms is shown in Fig. 4, in which projecting knobs h are employed instead of the ridges, as shown in Fig. 3. The upwardly-projecting arms b are made as narrow as possible, so as to throw but little shadow onto the globe.

When fitting the smut-catching device to a gas-bracket, the projecting arms bare bent outward after the base-plate has been iitted onto the gas-burner into such a position that they Will not interfere with the screwing on of the globeholder,and after this globe-holder has been secured the arms are bent up into au upright position, so that none of them will come into contact with the flame when the gas is lighted. It will be seen that by the use of a smut-catcher, as hereinbefore described, the globe or chimney is not liable to be cracked by the heated metal, no part of the frame or the disk itself touching the globe. l/Vhen the holder is fixed to the burner, the frame itself does not require to be removed for cleaning purposes, as the disk at the top of the holder can be readily removed by lifting the same When so required.

The arms b may eitherproject straight upward from the end of the short arms of the base-plate, or they may be slightly curved, as shown in the drawings.

The invention may be modified in several details without departing vfrom the essential features thereof, as hereinbefore set forth,and the different parts of the smut-catcher and its support may be constructed of metal or any other suitable material.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A smut-catching device for gas-burners consisting of a base-plate fitting over the burner, arms projecting upwardly from said base-plate, a ring carried at the upper ends of said arms and a smut-catching plate resting on said ring, substantially as hereinbefore described.

2. A smut-catching device for gas-burners consisting of a base-plate fitting over the burner, arms projecting upwardly from said base-plate, each of said arms having a num'- ber of projections near the top thereof to adapt the device for different heights of globes, a ring carried on said projections and a smut-catching plate supported by said ring substantially as hereinbefore described.
