UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD M. OBOYLAN, OF CORNING, OHIO.
CANDLE-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,765, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed July 6, 1885. Serial No. 170,830.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD M. OBoY- LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corning, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candle-Extinguishers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for extinguishing candles, and particularly those used upon the altars of Catholic churches.
Heretofore and prior to my invention great difficulty has been experienced in using extinguishers upon altar-candles, for the reason that the instant the device came in contact with the partly'liquefied extremity of the candle the melted grease, wax, or paratfine runs down upon the extinguisher, and mingling with the carbon deposit thereon drops upon the altarcloth or flowers, producing great disfigurement, which in a comparatively short time ruins the altardecorations. It is the purpose of my invention, therefore, to provide a simple and inexpensive extinguishing device in which the objection mentioned above is wholly avoided, and which also is adapted to be used as a lighter for igniting candles placed upon lofty supports.
The invention consists in the several novel parts and combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and definitely pointed out in the claims annexed to this specification.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this application, Figure l is a view in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral l designates a conical cup of the form usually employed in this class of devices. This cup is mounted upon the extremity of a curved tube, 2, to which a handle, 3, of suitable length, is attached in any convenient manner. Upon the lower open end of the cup 1 is attached an annulus, 4, having upon its exterior oppositelyprojecting studs or pins 5. Upon this annulus is slipped a cup formed of an outer cylindrical strip, 6, having L-shaped slots 7 ,which engage with the studs 5, and fasten the cup in place. Within the cylindrical piece6 is placed astrip, 8, bent into the form of a frustum of a cone, and soldered upon its lower edge to the lower edge of the cylindrical piece 6. The inner piece or frustum, 8, is open at top and bottom. Upon the back of the curved tube 2 is mounted a small tube, 9, the upper end of (No model.)
which diverges somewhat from the support. This tube may be conveniently and cheaply formed of a narrow strip of sheet metal bent into tubular form without uniting its edges. A wick, lighter, or small candle may be introduced within this tube in such a manner that its burning end projects from the upper end of the tube to serve as a lighter for igniting candles which from their position are not easily accessible.
The extinguisher, having the cup mounted upon the lower open end, is used in the ordinary manner by simply placing it over the lighted candle and pressingit down thereon until the flame is extinguished. The melted grease, mingled with the carbon deposited by the flame upon the interiorof the cone 1, runs down the latter and is caught in the cup formed by the parts 6 and 8. \Vhenthe accumulation in the latter becomes excessive, the cup may be readily removed and cleaned.
By this invention the continual dropping of grease, wax, or paraffine mingled with soot is wholly avoided.
WhatI claim is- 1. In an extinguisher, the combination of a handle, a conical cap carried thereby, and a grease-receiving cup connected with the open base of the conical cap, substantially as described.
2. In an extinguisher, the combination with a conical cap having a cylindrical annulus upon its lower end, of a cup formed of an outer cylinder and an inner frustum, the two being united at the lower edges, the outer piece having slots which engage with studs upon the annulus, substantially as described.
3. As a new article of manufactnre, an extinguisher consisting of a conical cap having a cylindrical annulus upon its lower end provided with studs, a cap composed of an outer cylinder and an inner frustum united at their lower edges, and having slots in the outer piece which receive the studs on the annulus, and a support upon which the cap is mounted upon the back of said support, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BERNARD M. OBOYLAN.
