Description

@einatmen jatmt @Hita Y IMPROVED ROCK-DRILLING MACHINE.

vTO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WALTER PIERCE, of Onion Valley, county of Plumas, State of- California, have invented an Improved Horizontal Rock-Drilling Machine; and I do hereby declare the following description and acompanying drawings are suicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
The object of' my invention is to pr'ovide an improved horizontal drilling machine which can bc operated in tunnels, or in any place where it is dilicult to swing a Sledge, and with greatly increased power and eiciency, the direction of the drill being determined by the angle of the ways in which it and the hammer move. The hammer is moved backward and forward by a lever or system of levers so arranged as to be worked with the greatest facility.
To more fully explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part of thisl Figure 1 is a plan.
Figure 2 is a side sectional elevation.
Similar letters of reference in each of the drawings indicate like parts.
A is the framework of the machine, having at one end the two plates B B. Between these plates, and extending lengthwise of the machine, are the ways C C, which turn on short axles a or other device, so as to allow them to take any necessary angle from the top to the bottom of the tunnel. These ways may bevraised or lowered by means of holes at diil'erent points in the frame. The drill D is supported by a cross-head, E, which slides between the ways and serves to guide the drill. The hammer F also slides on these ways behind thedrill, and is operated by the lever G, which passes through a slot made in the hammer. Friction-rollers o c are placed on each side of the lever-arm, ywhere it passes through the hammer. This lever turns on an axis or fulcrum at H, and has a short arm or projection at b, which fits into the eoncavity shown in the lever F. The lever I moves about the fulcrum d, and is, in turn, operated by the lever J, turning about the point e, the whole forming a compound lever, which gives the desired rate of speed to the hammer, and, by its change of direction, makes the working easy and convenient. A spring, [/may he placed across the ways, behind the hammer, to regulate the distance to which it shall be drawn back. The same device may be used in drilling perpendicularly, by slightly modifying the arrangement of the lever. The ways may be raised to the top by inverting the plates so that the lever will work outside the frame. The lever G and the short lever must also change places.
By my invention, that hardest of all labor, the swinging of a Sledge, is avoided, while the blows are given with much greater eect and accuracy. The weight of the hammer may be increased to twenty-five or thirty pounds, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The vadjustable ways C, having the drill D and the slotted hammer F, moving upon them, substantially as and forV the purpose described.
2. The levers J, I, and G, operating upon each other and upon the hammer F, substantially as and for the purpose described. i
3. I claim, in connection, as an improved drilling machine, the'levers J, I, and G, the hammer F, operating upon the drill D, together with the adjustable ways C C, the whole constructed substantially as and for the pur poses herein described. I
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
, WALTER PIERCE. [1.. s.]
