RICHARD L. JOI-INSON, OF ROLLA, MISSOURI.
PUSHING DEVICE FOR PLOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 710,464, dated October '7, 1902.
Application filed February 12, 1900. Renewed March 12, 1902. Serial No. 97,810. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD L. J OHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rolla, in the county of Phelps and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pushing Devices for Plows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pushing devices for plows; and it consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my complete invention as applied to a cultivator or plow with the belt which is carried by the body removed therefrom. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the belt, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the push-rods which I employ in carrying out my invention.
1 am aware that prior to my invention devices have been attached to plows and cultivat-ors, the upper ends of which are adapted to cooperate with the shoulders or armpits of the operator, and also like devices which are adapted to be brought in contact with the chest of said operator, the object of which were to push the plow or cultivator forward, using the hands of the operator to guide the said plow or cultivator; but in practice many objections have been experienced, for the reason that the muscles of the trunk of the body of the operator, as well as both arms, are fully involved.
The object of my invention is to apply the power necessary to force the plow or cultivator forward entirely from the hips of the operator, involving the legs of the operator only for obtaining the necessary power, in which instance the arms are not required to push the plow or cultivator, but are free to guide the same.
My invention consists principally in an attachment which may be readily applied to any form of hand cultivator, plow, harrow, or the like and is composed of a belt which is adapted to be secured about the body of the operator, substantially on a line with the hips, push-rods which are two in number, one end of which are adapted to be detachably secured to the plow, adjacent to the forward portion thereof, the upper ends of which are also detachably secured to the belt on either side of the operator, and means for flexibly suspending the said rods from the handles thereof at a suitable distance from the upper ends of said rods, whereby perfect freedom of the body is obtained when the plow is in use.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a plow of any suitable and well-known construction, 2 the handles forming a part of the plow for guiding the latter, and 3 the axle, upon which the wheel 4 is mounted, the opposite ends of said axle being provided with rings or loops 5 for receiving the pointed ends 6 of the push-rods 7,whereby the latter are de-, tachably secured to said plow. The upper ends of said push-rods 7are reduced, as shown at 8, which are adapted to be received by the openings 9, formed in the free ends of the flexible strips 10, which are constructed of leather or other suitable material, the opposite ends of said strips'being attached to the opposite sides of the flexible body-belt 11, which is adapted to surround the body about the hip portions of the operator, the said belt being provided with a buckle 12 and a perforated strap 13, which is adapted to cooperate with said buckle in the usual manner for properly tightening the said belt about the operator; but it is evident that any other suitable fastening device may be used to connect the ends of the belt without departing from the nature of my invention.
Attached to the handles 2 of the plow and depending therefrom are two flexible loops 14, which receive the push-rod 7, and thereby support the latter, whereby the said rods or the upper portions thereof are flexibly connected or suspended, whereby perfect freedom is given the body for guiding and pushing the plow or cultivator.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A pushing device for plows, comprising suitable push-rods, the lower ends of which are adapted to be attached to a suitable plow or cultivator, means carried by said plow for flexibly suspending the rods, and a suitable device carried by the operator about the hip portions, with which the rods are adapted to be attached, whereby the armsof the operator are given perfect freedom for guiding the plow 0r cultivator, substantially as described.
10 the belt, on either side of the operator, where- 1 by perfect freedom is given the arms of said operator for guiding the plow 0r cultivator,
substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICHARD L. JOHNSON.
