REIN HOLDER.`
(Application filed Aug. 27, 19o) (No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATE T OFFICE.
THOMAS LEIGI-I TI-IOMPSON, OF LEWISBURG, TENNESSEE.
REINPHOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '709,585, dated September 23, 1902.
Application filed August 27, 1901. Serial No. 73,436. (No model.)
To all whom 1 it may conccrn:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LEIGH THOMP- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Lewisburg, Marshall county, in the State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Attachment to be Used on Buggy-Harness for the Purpose of supporting the Lines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a simple device for holding the lines in a proper place while driving a horse in single harness; and its objects are, first, to prevent the horse from switching its tail over the lines; second, to prevent the lines from falling to the sides of the horse and becoming entangled with other parts of the harness; third, to keep the lines directly over the back of the horse, so that he can be managed more easily and more safely, and, fourth, to render drving more convenient and safer. Theaccompanyingdrawingsshow its Construction and where and how attached to the harness.
Figure l is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a View showing the two hinged parts sp'ung open in positions to be applied to a harness. Fig. 3 is a View of the parts disassembled. Fg. 4: is a View of the device as applied to a harness.
Reference being had to the details of p the drawings by letter, A and A' designate two parts that are hinged together on a pin R, and each is provided with a curved upturned end P. Said part- A' is recessed to receive I the hinged end of part A, and a spring S is Secured at R' to the piece A, and its.` free end is designed to bear against piece A and normally hold the parts A and A' in the positions shown in Fig. 1. A tongue T projects from parts A' beyond the pivotal pin R, and when in the position shown in Fig. l the end of said tongue is adapted to rest on a shoulder T', with the under edge of the tongue flush with the under edge of A. The parts A and A' are each cut away, as at O, forning 'when the tongue is closed an elongated space to receive a back-strap.
In applying the device to a harness the parts A and A' are sprungapart, as shown in Fig. 2, and the tongue T is inserted through the loop of the back-strap of a harness, and the parts when Sprung together will be held by the spring in the position shown in Fig. 4:.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A rein-holder comprising the paris A and A' pivoted together, a spring S fixed at one end to part A, and held yieldingly against part A', a tongue T projecting beyond the pivotal points of said parts and adapted to rest against a shoulder T', the adjacent faces of said tongue and parts A forming an elongated slot to receive a back-strap of a harness, as set forth.
T. LEIGII THOMPSON.
