By increasingand decreasing and thereby varying the rate of speed and distance given to the horizontal reciprocating movements of the carrying-beams and cloths 'l and T the ribs of the two cloths are made to cross each other in some places more than in other-sand for the ribs of the two cloths to be delivered to the rollers parallel to each other for various short distances, in accordance with the contour of the revolving tappet S, thereby delivering the clothsT and T to the roller B and composite bowl in a manner for producing water-marks having a variable and like watered design upon the face of each cloth without any friction or rubbing action of the roller B or composite bowl G upon either piece of cloth, the crushing or flattening of the ribs producing lustrous water-markingwherever the ribs are allowed to cross each other and plain, with a ground-ribbed eifect, where the ribs of the cloths pass parallel to each other into and through the nip of the rollers B and 0. Suitable brakes, such as a leather or like strap U, passing over eachcloth-beam H and J, with a weight W applied thereto, as shown, serve to keep the cloths T. and T in tension, also prevent overrunning, and al low the cloths to be fed uniformly to the smooth-surfaced roller B and composite bowl 0 of calendering-machine.
It will be obvious that my invention may be carried into effect by horizontally reciproeating one beam onlysay, for example, beam H-and produce water-marking on the two cloths T and T as they are passed between the roller B and bowl 0, in which case the beam J would be allowed to rotate in its journals without any horizontal movement and the bottom arms of levers M and M dispensed with, so that the top arms only of said levers would be incontact with'the end of axle H, by which the beam H and cloth T would be horizontally reciprocated, the top arms of the levers M and M being held in contact with the ends of axle H by a rod connecting the two levers together in any suitable and well-known manner for the purpose. The cloths T and T as they leave the roller B and composite bowl 0. may be wound upon rollers, such as Y, rotated at the requisite speed in the usual manner by a belt engaging with small pulley Y, or cuttled by an ordinary cuttler Z, operated by a belt connection with pulley Z, disk crank Z and connecting-rod Z arranged in the manner as hitherto.
