Description

\ L. N. conNETT.
ANIMAL. EXTEHMINATR.
(Application led Jan. 18, 1902.)
Patented Sept. I6., |902.
(N0 Model.)
Nital) STATES ANIMAL-EXTERMINATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 709,207, dated September 16, 1902. Application filed January 13, 1902. Serial No. 89,4A1. (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom, it 1v1/ty concern.-
Bo it known that I, LORENZ N. Consumi", a citizen of the United States, residing at Natividad, county of Monterey, State of Oalifornia, have invented an Improvement in Animal-Exterminators; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improved apparatus in which smoke or other noxious vapors are generated and then forced into the holes of bnrrowing pests, such as gophers, squirrels, and the like. Its object is to furnish a serviceable portable device and to afford a means of preventing the burning out of the cylinder in which the fire is ordinarily kindled.
It consists of a generator-chamber, a removable perforated receptacle fitting therein and adapted to `contain the combustible materials, an air-compressor, tween said compressor and generator through which a current of air may be forced, and comprises details which will be more fully set forth hereinafter, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a Vertical section taken on the line y y of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 shows a locking device for cover of combustion-chamber.
A represents a generator-chamber, which is preferably of a cylindrical form. The end of the cylinder is provided with asuitable cover 2, hinged, as at 3, and adapted to be secured by a latch 4:, so as to prevent the escape between the edges of the cover and cylinder of any of the vapors generated in the chamber. Fitting the interior of the generator is a receptacle or bucket 5, which is of metal or other suitable material and adapted to contain the combustible materials. Heretofore it has been customary to make the fire directly upon the bottom of the generator, which in a short time became burned out, rendering the whole apparatus worthless. It is my intention to make the fire in the bucket first and then place the latter in the cylinder. If the bucket should become burned out, it can be replaced easily and at small expense instead of throwing away the whole machine. This bucket is about three-fourths the height of the cyll `sides of the bucket.
connections beinder and is made with its sides tapering and perforated, as at 6. The upper rim of the bucket is adapted just to fit sung against the sides of the cylinder, and an annular ledge 7 on the interior of the cylinder engages the Below the ledge 7 a space S is formed between the adjacent walls of the bucket and cylinder, and communication between thisspace and the space above the bucket is only through the perflorations The vapor-discharge pipe a opens into this space 8. In order not to interfere with the proper fitting of the bucket in the cylinder, the bail 9 is attached on the inner sides of the bucket at l0, as shown.
B is a pump-cylinder secured upon the base 1l, which also supports the generator. A
plunger 12 operates in the cylinder B, and the plunger-rod 13 extends through the cover 14 and has a suitable handle 15, by which it may be engaged by the operator. The cover 14C is perforated at 16. through which :air may be drawn to the cylinder. The plunger is provided with the flap-valves 17 on its under side, which open downwardly as the plunger is lifted. Lugs 18 on the plunger are adapted to strike the bottom of the cylinder, limiting the stroke of the plunger, and so protecting the valves from possible injury. A pipe 19 conducts the air from the pump-cylinder to the generator. This pipe has one end entering the bottom of the pump-cylinder and the other end discharging into the generator at a point above the rim of the bucket 5. A valve 20 is adapted to open into the passage 19 on compression and to close on suction. This valve is here shown as a disk movable in a short vertical section of the pipe 19 and normally resting against a ledge on the under side of the bottom of the generator. ried on one end of a lever 21, which is weighted at the other end and centrally fulcrumed, as at 2 2.
In operation the bucket 5 is charged with suitable combustible materials, which generate in burning a dense poisonous smoke.
prefer the use of' charcoal, coal--tar, and sulfur. This material being lighted, the bucket is placed in the generator, the cover closed, and the outlet a connected with the burrow by means of the pipe-sections 23, which are jointed at 24, so as to be turnable in any di- This disk is car-V IOC rection. Airis then forced by the pump into the top of the generator, which forces the vapor and smoke downwardly through the perforations 6 into the space 8 and out through aand the pipe 23 into the burrow.
The cylinders A and B are connected by means of a brace 24', and a handle 25 allows the operator to move the apparatus readily from place to place. When not in use, the pipe 23 may be removed from the end of pipe aand supported in a strap 26 between the cylinders.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination in an animal-exterminator of a generator-chamber having an internal ledge, a removable fire-pot'having a bead to lit said ledge, and a handle by which the fire-pot may be removed from the chamber, an outlet from said generator and means for forcing a current of air through said generator.
2. The combination in an animal-exterminator of a generator-chamber, having a supfire-pot suspended upon said support, and having a handle or bail by which it may be inserted'into, and removed'from, the chamber, a discharge-outlet from said generator, means by which air may be forced into the top otl said generator and made to pass downwardly through said perforated pot.
3. The combination in an animal-exterminator of a generator having a ledge extending inward from its inner wall, a removable fire-pot fitting therein and having a handle or bail by which it may be inserted into, and removed from, the chamber, said pot having a rim to engage said ledge and having tapered, perforated sides, said perforations forming the only channels of communication between the spaces in said chamber on either side of the bucket, means by which air is forced into the space above said bucket, and a dischargeoutlet in the space below said bucket.
4. The combination in an animal-exterminatorjof a generator, a perforated re-pot fitting therein, an annular ledge on. the interior of said generator engaging the said pot, and suspending the latter above the bottom of the generator, an air-pump and connections of said air-pump with the space in the generator above the bucket and a discharge-outlet intermediate of the sides of the pot and generator.
5. The combination in an animal-exterminator, of generator and pump cylinders arranged side by side, a single base to which they are both connected to form a rigid substantially unitary structure, a removable, per forated tire-pot fitting said generator-cylin der, and connections between said cylinders through which a current of air may be forced into the generator, and a discharge-outlet from the latter. i
6. The combination in an animal-exterminator of generator and pump cylinders arranged side by side, means for rigidly connecting them to form substantially a unitary structure, said pum p-cyli-nder having a plunger movable therein, a plunger-rod, a perforated cover through which said rod is slidable, air connections between the bottom of the pump-cylinder and the top of the generator-cylinder, a valve in said connections, a discharge-pipe entering said generator and movable jointed sections fitting the. end of said pipe.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand. i
