SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,209, dated August 22, 1882.

Be it known that I, AUSTIN D. PALMER, o
Abilene, in the county of Taylor and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Killing Rodents, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to furnish an apparatus that may be used effectively for the destruction of all animals that burrow in the ground; and it consists in a furnace for the generation of sulphurous odors or other suffocating gases and a pump for forcing the gases into the burrows of theanimals, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specificatiomin which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional elevation of the ap-. paratus as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the furnace.
Ais the furnace, which consists of an inner cylinder, a, closed at the bottom and perforated in the upper portions, and an outer inclosingcase, b, which has an open bottoin'and is provided at the top with a removable cap, 0, that gives access to the interior of the furnace. d is a tube from the lower part of the inner cylinder, a, extending through the case b, and provided with a flexible tube, 6, for connection with the pump. The furnace is also provided with a handle, f, for convenience in carrying it.
B is an air-pump, that may be of any suitable construction, provided with a piston-rod, g, and having its outlet-pipe h connected with the flexible tube 0 of the furnace. The pump (No model.)
is mounted upon a suitable base and provided with a strap, 1', for use in carrying the pump from place to place.
, In the operation of the apparatus the furnace is to be placed over the outlet of the burrow and the soil packed tightly around the lower end of the inclosing-case b, so as to exclude the'air.
