TO ALL -WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, MORRIS SE'IFERTII, of Morristown, in the county of Morris, and State of NewJersey, have invented'a new and improved Punching Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skillcd in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations, partly in section, of my improved punching machine, showing the parts in different positions.

This invention relates to a new punching machine for perforating plates, or for stamping or notching the same, and consists in the use of an automatic clearer, by which the plate, after a hole or depression has been punched, is lifted off the lower stationary punch, so that it can be easily adjusted upon the same for the punching of the next hole or mark, while the die is moved up by the cam of the driving-shaft.
The object of this invention is to clear the plate after each stroke, to avoid. the'neccssity-of-raising it off. the punch, thereby permitting continuous operation of the apparatus, while heretofore the machine had to be stopped to give time for taking off and readjusting the plate.'
A represents the standard, made of cast iron or other suitable material, in the ordinary or suitable form. B is the bed, in which the punch C is held. D is the shaft, in the upper part of the standard, carrying an eccentric, a, by means of which the slide E is moved up and down, the said slide E being tubular at its lower end to receive the die F, as is clearly shown in figs. 1 and'2. The punch C, which is of cylindrical or prismatic form, is fitted in a tubular holder, G, and rests on the end of a screw, 6, fitted into the lower end of the holder G. The holder is fitted through a hole in the bed-plateB, and base. shoulder, c, by which it is supported upon the bed-plate, and through which screws (2 are fitted into the bed plate, to prevent the holder from turning. The punch, if of cylindrical form, is prevented from turning in the holder Gby means of a pin or; screw, e, as shown in fig. 1. The punch, when secured in place in the manner above described, can be refitted and refiled when worn, and raised to the proper heightby the screw 6, audthus it can be almost completely used up. The die F is made tubular, if holes are to be punched through the plates, to receive the pieces punched out, but if marks orindentations are to be stamped upon the face of the plate, the die can be solid, its lowerend being counter sunk, as required. The tubular die can be fastened inthe slide E by means of a screw, f, fitting through the side of the slide into a notch in the upper part of the die. The'solid die should be made long enough to reach to the upper end of the hole in the slide E, so that the upper end of the die will receive the pressure and not a shoulderon the lower part of the same, such shoulder being provided on the hollow die. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is-
