"The Schedule referred to in thesvefbgettera Patent and maxing part of the same.
. I, CHARLES S. MOSELY, of the city of Elgin,- l State ofilllinoisha vented a` certain new and useful improveinen description, reference being had to the accompanying drawlng` making apart of this specification, irrwhich`-A Figure lj-is an elevation.

Figure 48` is the slide. Figure 9, a blank to` be cut. Figure 10, the same after being cut. l l In,manufacturingcompensatingbalances-forwatches"- a steel" diskv is made, having a rim or flanch ofthe: same material, around which rim is placed arim of brass, the two being unitedso as to form a singleiriin.,
The greater port-ion of the diskwithin the rri 1s then cut outby means of hand and lathe-work, learing only a narrow cross-bar from side to side.-
It has been supposed that` this work could not he performedby apunch, as great accuracy is required and displacement or unequal stretching of the remain# ing partsmust be avoided.
The object of my .inventon is to construct a punch bythe use of which this work canbe performedas well as by the old method, and without injury to the balance; and I accomplis* this by so constructing my improved machine thatV every. part of the "blank,
` from which the balance is tobe made, excepting" those `partswhich are to be cut ou-t, -will be supported, and held rnily in place between opposingv surfaces while being punched.
The several parts of my machine are made oignietal.- f
In the drawingl A represents the bottom portion die of my machine, which is a part of or permauentlysecured to the bed of the -inachine, the hole a' in this-piece heingatfthe top justas large'as the disk within/the rim f the blank fromwhich thebalance is to he made, and across this hole d, from side to side, is a solldbar, b, of the same width as the bariu the balance after it has'been punched, `sothat the rim of the blank, and that por; tion forming the bar after punching, rest upon` solid metal while in the machine. f
B O Diform a single hollow piece.
Bis aange, which its over the raised portie thev die A, cand B being of the same thickness. l I' `.Asshown, d is aseparate piece, secured to alluring groovesfor the purpose ofguiding the slider., fig., S
of which will be seen in figs, 1, 2, 3, and 4.
In this piece F is a hole, j, of the same sine-'as tl in A,and across it is a solid metal bar, i, correspol ing with the similar bar l1. l
Thisbar fi projects` below the other parts ofnF distance equal to the distance which the rim of 't blank g extends above the disk. y n l This holder is so arranged in the machine thatt `bar t is exact-ly over the bar l), and the edge .af oi the edge of the hole (t. i 1
Three metal rods, 71, are fastened to F, which rc extend np through holes in the'eniargedpartof which enlarged partis provided with a screwthre: The nut G is provided lwith a female screw, and used to` lforce F down upon thehlank and holdit wh being punched. y
As shown, the -uppcr ends of' these rods h' are contact vwith a shoulder within G,'whieh, when G screwed down, forces F down also. l x
vThis ipay be accomplished in other ways. i Noteli might-.be made in the rods near the top and ou `t outside,`and a plate or ring iitting the notches ,con be fastened to the under side of G for the purpose lowering and raising F. As sho\vn,.it is raised by means of two springs, beneath it. j. f f i D is hollow, for the purpose of receiving the p ton Hz.
The lower end of 'this piston exactly fits the he in F and A, and has a slit or opening, an, in it corl spending with the bars b fi., and largeenough to alb the piston to pass down over them.
This part ot' the piston is represented in iig. ii.v The piston is kept in proper position by means the groove l and a corresponding stop.V
In iig. 1, the holder F is represented raised, so as permit the slide E, containing a blank, to bepass in beneath F to the position it'occupes whenth'e bla :isready to be punched.
Ilrtig. 0, this part lill is represented. forced doi upon the blank, which is shown in the slide, whilet pistonis raised ready for the stroke.
The operation of my device is as follows:
VThe part F' haring `:leen first raised a little,` t slide 14],haring a blank, y, in e, is placed in its pre1'. position, which is determined by a suitable stopwh the rim of the blank g, and that part oi' the diskoi the bar l), will rest upon solid metal.
The bolder F will then be screwed down tigh upon the blank', the bar icoining in contact with i isk, .and exactly over the bar b, while the lower edge x`Jlliefpiston is operateilin the usual manner, and its fthe holder F will be in contact with the rim of the desee't arrestedby well-known devices. lanl g, so that every part of the bktnk, except that ,Whatl'clain as 'new'is as follows:
hicl-is to be out away by the end of the piston, will The combination of the annular holder F and b'mi, e supported and held fil-m15Y ii.- plzice between opposand the die A and im b, with the bifurea'ted piston or ig suri'a'ces. punch H, as and for the purposes set forth.
The piston D is then forced down with such force Y OHAS, S. MOSELEY.
s may be necessary, instantly cutting out all of, the
sk of the blank except that between the bars b fi, Witnesses:
1d leaving only the rim and :t central bar, as seen invk v. E. A. WEsT, g. 10, thus saving much labor and leaving the bal- O', `W. 130m)g ice uninjured.
