UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES SCHOFIELD, OF PETOSKEY, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PHILIP B. VVAOHTEL, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR SHEARING AND PUNCHING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,960, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed October 2, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES SOHOFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petoskey, in the county of Emmet and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Machine for Punching and Shearing, of which the following is a specification.
construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device arranged as a punch. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the device arranged as a shearing-machine. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view showing the saw-gumming lever or tool-holder. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view showing the method of mounting the lower shear-plate in the frame. Fig. 5 is a-transverse sectional view taken on the line as so of Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
l'designates the base of my improved shearing and punching machine, which is provided with. laterally-extending perforated lugs 2 to receive bolts by means of which it may be mounted in position for operation. The base 1 is provided near its rear end with upwardly-extending brackets 3 3, having transverse perforations t to receive a pin 5, upon which the operating-lever 6 is pivotally mounted. One end of said operating-lever has a vertical perforation or socket 7, in which a punch 8 is detachably mounted. The other end of. said operating-lever is provided in one side with a recess 9, in which is mounted the shear-blade 10, which is held in position by means of countersunk fiat-headed screws 11. The front end of the base has two forwardly- Serial No. 825,767. (No model.)
extending arms 12 13, the front ends of which have perforated lugs 14, through which passes a connecting-bolt l5, bymeans of which the said arms may be drawn tightly together. The inner or adjacent sides of the arms 12 13 are provided with segmental recesses 16 and 17, which together form a complete circuit, and at the lower ends of which are formed shoulders or flanges 18. The said flanges serve to support a circular block or die 19, having a series of punch-holes 20, of difierent sizes, arranged circumferentially, and adapted to register with the punch which may be mounted in the socket provided for its reception at one end of the operating-lever. This die, which may be readily adjusted so as to cause any one of the perforations to register with the punch, may, when. properly adjusted, be firmly secured by simply tightening the bolt 15.
The base of the machine is providednear its front end with u pwardly-extending brackets 20, having transverse perforations 21 to receive a pin or bolt 22, upon which is mounted the operating-lever 23, having the eccentric or cam shaped head 24, which is adapted to bear against the front end of the lever 6,
which may thereby be forced in a downward direction against the tension of a spring 25, which is arranged under the front end of said lever between the brackets 20 of the base.
The circular block or die 19 is provided, in addition to the punch-holes 20, with a series of notches or recesses 27, of different sizes and shapes and adapted to receive the gummingtools- 28, which may be mounted in a socket 29 at the outer end of a lever 30, which, when desired, may be substituted forthe lever 6. The operation of this device will be obvious to any one who understands the use of this class of machines.
When it is desired to use the machine for shearing purposes, the block or die 19 is removed and in its place is substituted the lower shear blade 32, the front end of which is adapted to fit between the front ends of the arms 12 13, extending at the front end of the base. The under side of the blade 32 is also provided with a notch 33, adapted to fit over the connecting-bolt 15. The blade 32 is arranged to rest upon the shoulders or flanges 1S, and it is firmly secured in operative position by tightening the bolt 15. The lever 6 is then adjusted with the shear-blade 10 in engagement with the blade 32, and the device is then ready for use as a shearing-machine.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood. The machine is simple in construction and very strong and compact, occupying but little floorspace. At the same time it is practically use ful for three diiferent pu1'posesviz., shearing, punching, and saw-gumming-and by using interchangeable dies and tools the capacity of the machine may be made to cover a wide range. It will be observed that both the upper and lower shear-blades are removable, so that either may be readily detached and replaced in case of accident.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 5 of the United States- 1. The base or frame having up\\'ardly-extending brackets to support the tool holding and operating levers, said frame being provided with forwardlyextending arms provided on their inner sides with segmental recesses having flanges or shoulders at their lower ends and forwardly-extending transversely-perforated lugs, combined with the clamping-bolt connecting said lugs, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the base having forwardly-extending arms provided on their inner sides with segmental recesses having flanges or shoulders at their lower ends, and transversely-perforated lugs, of the clampingbolt connecting said lugs, and a shear-blade adapted to rest upon the shoulder or flange and having in its under side a notch adapted to engage the said connecting-bolt, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES SCI IOFIELD.
