ADOLPH DELKESOAMP, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGN OR TO JOHN `A. NEWBOULD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 65,652,dated June 11, 1867. i'
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR MAKING GLASPS FOR HOOP-SKIRIS.
@Ligt Stighule wenn tu iii tlges lttrs zitelit :mit mating grat nf tlg same.
To ALL WneM rr MAY ooNcnRN:
ABe it known that I, DOLPH DnLKEscAMP, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented, made, anda'pplied to use, a certain new and useful Improvement in Presses for Cutting Out and Bending Sheet-Metal Clasps for vSkeleton-Skirts and other articles and I do hereby declare the following., to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof4 the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, wherein-- Figure 1 isaplan of said press. Figure 2 is an elevation of the same with the bed in section; and Figure 3 is a plan of the die and bending apparatus.
-Similar marks of reference denote the-same parts. l
In Letters Patent granted April 15, 1862, to John A. Ncwbould, assignee, a machine for. cutting and bending skirt clasps is shown, in which'the bending is eiiected by areciprocating punch contiguous to the cutting punch and die. In this machine, the bending device being near the cutting mechanism, there is butllittle room for introducing the sheet of metal, and it generally has to be cut into strips, often involving considerable waste of material; besides which the mechanism is costly and diii'cult to keep in running order. Y
The nature of my said invention consists in a swinging bending bar, located below the cutting mechanism, and to bend up the skirt clasp or other article that is delivered by a slide endwise beneath said bending bar,
and that bar carries said article down through a. notched die, bending it up to shape and delivering it from the V machine. By this mechanism much more space is allowed' for the presentation of the sheet metal to the cutting dies, and the machine is rendered very simple, durable, and easily kept in order.
In the drawing, a is the bed, of any suitable size and character, upon which is the head-block b, carrying the punch c and die d, of any usual construction to cnt out the desired article of sheet metal or other material introduced between the punch and die. f is a lever on a fulcrum, e, acted upon by the link gvand crank L of the drivingrshaft c, rotated by competent power. Beneath thedie d is a groove, 2, in which is fitted a slide, t', acted upon at the proper time by the lever l, and a grooved earn, m, on the shaft 7c, to move the clasp or other article cut out by the punch c and delivered below the die al to the bending-up mechanism, which consists of a stationary die, n, formed at the end of the groove 2, and of the proper shape, so that the article will be bent up to formby being pressed down through the opening in said die n, by the swinging bending bar o, beneath which said article is moved at the proper time by the slide z'. This bending bar o is at the end of a shaft, p, that is set in bearings in the bed a, and acted upon at the proper time by the grooved cam q on the shaft c, giving motion to thearm r of said 'shaft pl The bending bar o and parts that actuate the same being below the level of the died, there is nothing to obstruct the presenta-tion of the sheet to the action of the punch Vin whatever manner may be the'most desirable, and the scrap is not likely to become entangled in or obstruct any of the moving parts. i v
YVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The swinging bending bar o in combination with the slide i, dies d and n, and punch c, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. Y v
Dated March 9, 1867.
I A. DELKESCAMP.
