IMPROVED PADDLEfWHEEL.

i TQ ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that. I, WILLIAM HUNTER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful improvement-in PropellingWheels for Steamboats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section.l t
The same letters are employed in the' indication of identical parts in both'gures.
A isthe hub or centre, to -which the radial arms B are attached, securely1 held iu their relative positions by the rim C, which passes around the wheel near the end of the arms, on each set of radial arms, of which there fmay be two or more. The oats D are flat on their faces, and are bolted to the ends of the radial arms, and to the side of the next preceding arm,'or to the rim C, so as to form an angle of about forty degrees to the arm to the end of which they are attached: When these-buckets leave the Water they will be nearly vertical, Tie
. buckets will present a continually pressing surface against the-water, andjlose no part of their power in raising the bucket from the water,.which, in the ordinary wheel, is consumed in lifting the water upon 'the face of the bucket when rising towards the surface. This form of bucket gives strength tothejjvheel by diagonallybracing lthe arms, and it, may be easily and cheaply adopted upon any ordinary paddle-wheel.
I am aware that numerous feathering-buckets are so arranged as to stand nearly verticai when leaving the water; and I do not, therefore, claim this position of the lbuckets under all cbnditions; but what I. claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A paddle-Wheel constructed with radial arms Bland iioats D, which are rigidly attached to the end of one arm, and, extending in front thereof, are secured on the opposite edge of the nekt preceding arm, or to the rim C, in such manner as to form an acute angle at its upper edge, and form a diagonal bracing for the arms, substantially as described. l i
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. HUNTER.
