T0 ALL PERSONS T0 WHOM` THESE PRESENTS' SHALL COME:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. HOLLAND, of Chelsea, in the county of Su'olk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful improvement in Paddle-Wheels for steam vessels; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a top view.

My improvement consists in a peculiar arrangement or arrangements of the floats or paddles of the wheel.,
In carrying out myinvention I employ one series of main paddles o r oats, A A A, and an auxiliary series, B B B, of less size. Each of the main floats is rectangular in shape, and straight or about soin its length, and is extended obliquely across the wheel from one side frame, C, to the other, O. Each auxiliary float B is'also rectangular in shape, and runs from the middle of a main float, A, to one of the side frames, andvma'kes an acute angle with the main float. Each main oat at its middle may be fastened to and so as to be supported by one of a series of radial arms, D D, ASec., arranged midway between-the two side frames and projecting from a hub, E, xed on the shaft F, by which such side frames are supported. All the main oats may be run in the `same direction across the wheel, but I prefer to have every other one of the series stand with its Obliquity in Aa direction opposite to that of the next main paddle, in which case the auxiliary float would range in like relation with respect to the next adjacent` auxiliary iloat, the same being as represented in the drawings, in which each main float is arranged diagonally between the next two main floats upon opposite sides of it. This arrangement of the main and auxiliary oats isA better than that where'all the main floats are oblique in one direction,l as the lateral strain on the wheels induced by one paddle or Heat while in action will be wholly counteracted by that of the next paddle; but in the first-mentioned arrangement the lateral strain will be partially counteracted by the actionI of the next adjacent auxiliary iioat. Each 'of such arrangements' of the main andv auxiliary oats will be advantageous, as it involves the principle of my invention, which consistsin the arrangement of each main paddle, made as described, obliquely across the entire wheel in connection with that of an auxiliary' paddle, so as to extend from the middle of the main paddle to one side of the wheel, and so as to serve as a brace or support to the main paddle.
I nd by my improvement the water, when the wheel is in action, is ejected laterally from it t'ogreat advantage, in consequence of which there will be but little, if any, lifting of the water in the rear of and by the wheel to impede its rotation. Besides this, my improvement causes the wheel to run very steadily and to travel withy a small amount of what is termed slip I claim the arrangement of the main and auxiliary oats of the wheel with respect to each other, and theside frames, substantially as specified and represented, each main float,.under such arrangement, being extended diagonally or obliquely across the entire wheel, and its auxiliary float being made to extend from the middle of l the main float at an acute angle thereto, and joined to one of the side frames as specified. I also claim the arrangement of each main float and its brace or auxiliary so as to stand obliquely in the wheel, in directions opposite to those of the next adjacent main float and its brace or auxiliary Hoat, the whole being as represented.A in the drawings and as hereinbefore described.
