SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 708,019, dated September 2, 1902.
Application filed November 2, 1901. Serial No. 80,932. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:V
Be it known that I, AMBROS BURK," a citi-` zen of the United States, residing at and whose post-office address is Columbia' City, in the county of Whitley and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful lImprovements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention relates-to neck-yokes for vcdirections, the inner ends of the rods having permanent loose connection with the tongue, while their outer ends are detachably secured to the rings commonly employed at the ends of the usual neck-yoke chains. y
An important 'characteristic of theinvention distinguishing it from the prior art is that the rods which hold the chains in their diverged position are securely connected to both the tongue and chains and constitute a permanent attachment of thetongue.
A further important feature of the invention affecting its simplicity and cheapness is that it requires no special construction of tongue and. may be appliedto any ordinary stii vehicle-.tongue by an unskilled person.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part ofthis specification, and its novel features will be defined in the appended claim.
The drawing represents a top plan view of the front portion of a vehicle-tongue with my invention applied thereto. l
The reference-numeral 1 designates th tongue, having at its front end the usual ring 2, to which are welded the forward ends of the chains 3 and4. 5 5 designate bracketsv4 having eyes or perforations 6 and secured to said tongue at a suitable point in rear of the ring 2 by any desired means, as by headed bolts 7.
8 8 designate rods each having one of its ends bent upon itself to form a loop or eye 9. Through the medium thereof and the eyes 6 said rods are loosely and permanently connected to the brackets 5. The outer ends of the rods 8 are provided with screw-threads for a portion of their length for the reception of U-shaped links 10, which have their ends formed into barrels or sleeves, one sleeve of each being seven-'threaded to permit said links -to be detachably secured against casual displacement to the rods 8. The links 10 are passed through the end links of the chains 3 and 4:, and the unthreaded barrels or sleeves of said links are slid upon the outer ends of the rods, and the threaded barrels or sleeves engage the screw-threaded ends of the rods 8,.

The utility of the improvement is obvious, and it Will be apparent that when the team is unhitched the entire neck-yoke device remains connected to the chains and tongue and cannot be lost or displaced. To hitch, it is ,only necessary to buckle the neck-straps to the links lO.
I claim- The combination with a polehaving a ring rigidly secured to the front end thereof, of
brackets attached to diametrically opposite portions of the pole in rear of the front extremity and provided with central perforations, rods 8 having their inner ends loosely connected to the perforations of the brackets' and their outer ends screw-threaded, U- shaped links 10 each having the terminals formed into eyes, one of which is screwthreaded and the other large enough to slip v over thethreads on the outer end ofthe rod whereby the said links may be positively applied to the rods, and chains 3 connected to the ring at the front end of the pole and the links 10, the latter being slipped through the rear links ofthe said chains.
