CANTEEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,873, dated August 26, 1902. Application led October 5,1901. Serial No. 77,684. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may con/cern,.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Canteens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in canteens; and the main object of myinvention is the provision of a nozzle or nipple connected to the inlet or outlet of the canteen, so that the water is filtered as it is drawn therefrom when it is being drunk. It is especially adapted for use when troops are marching and have no time to filter the water before or in filling the canteen.
Another object of myinvention is the provision of a canteen and filter therefor which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness, and by reason thereof is very useful and practical.
To attain the desired objects, my invention consists of a device of this character embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view of the upper portion of a canteen with my improvement. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the device detached from the canteen and having its various parts separated. Fig. 2a is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a modified form, and Eig. 4 is an elevation thereof with its parts separated. Fig. 5 is a cross-section taken on line c oc of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the canteen, which is provided with the opening ` 2, which is an inlet or outlet to the interior thereof. Fitting in this opening is the collar or neck 3, in which is adapted to fit my spout and filtering device. This device consists of the elastic stopper 4, which fits snugly within the neck and is provided With the central opening 5, whose walls are grooved, so as to form air-vents 6 when the tube 7 is surrounded by the stopper. The tube '7 is provided with the circumferential rim or bead 8, which is adapted to form a guard for the vent-cap 9, which surrounds the tube 7 and fits snugly upon the top of the stopper, so that its perforations are above the air-vents 6 of the stopper. This tube is provided With the sealed upper end 10, which is provided with the perforations 11. The lower end of the tube is provided with the threads 12,so that the threaded end 13 of the cap 14 may be engaged, and thus draw the vent-cap closely upon the stopper and make a tight connection. This cap 14: is provided with perforations 15 in its sides and end, and incased by said cap is a filtering material 16. Secured loosely to the vent-cap by means of a chain is the cover or top 17, which is adapted to surround the upper end of the tube 7 when the canteen is not in use.
In the modified form I. provide a bayonetslot 18 in the neck 3, and adapted to fit snugly in the neck and have its pin 19 fit in the slot is the sleeve 20, which is provided with the gauze bottom 21, so that water may be strained before entering the canteen. A wad 22, of filtering material, maybe fitted in said sleeve, and the tube 23, carrying the elastic stopper '24, is placed in said sleeve so that its perforated lower end 25 rests upon the filteringwad. This tube is provided with the upper perforated end 26, upon which is adapted to fit the cap 27.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the usefulness and practicability of myirnprovement will be readily understood and its numerous advantages be fully appreciated, as any trooper will be provided with a canteen which is as readily filled as the one in general use and will further be provided with a canteen which insures a filtration of the contents as it is being drunk.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-Y 1. In combination with a canteen, of a device fitting in the neck thereof, consisting of a stopper having an opening with grooved sides having a closed upper end provided with perforations fitting in said opening, a rim upon the exterior of said tube above the stopper, a Vent-cap surroundin g said tube and held upon the stopper by the rim of the tube, and a filtering-cap detachably connected to the lower end of the tube.
2. In combination with a canteen of a device fitting in the neck thereof, consisting IOO of a stopper having a central opening with grooved sides, a tube fitting in said opening and allowing` said grooved sides to provide a series of vertical channels therearound, a cap mounted upon said tube provided with a series of perforations to fit on the stopper, and means for filtering the Water carried at the lower end of the tube. i
3. In combination with a canteen, of a device fitting in the neck thereof consisting of a stopper provided with a central opening, a tube fitting in said opening in such a manner so as to provide a series of vent-channels about the tube, a rim carried bysaid tube, a vent-.cap fitting upon said tube and over the stopper, and a detachable filtering means carried by the lower end of the tube.
4. In combination with a canteen, of a de- GEORGE M. SPENCER.
