UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES R. STOVER, OF CORAOPOLIS, PENNSYLVANIA.
STOVE-DAM PER ATTACHM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,366, dated August 19,1902.
Application ledebruary 21, 1902. Serial No. 95,116. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beitknown thatl, JAMES R. STOVER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Coraopolis, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Damper Attachments, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in stove-damper attachments, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby a damper may be accurately'adjusted to any degree and securel retained in the desired position.
The present invention further contemplates the vprovision of `an attachment that can be readily secured to the handle ofthe ordinary rotary damper and containing a spring-pressed plunger adapted to normally engage the stovepipe, thereby retaining the damper in any desired position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, andspeciiically pointed out in the claims.-
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure lis a front elevation of a portionof of a portion of a stove, showing the attachment in vertical section; and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
In the drawings the reference-numeral 1 indicates the stove, 2 represents the stovepipe, and 3 denotes the damper, which is secured upon the shaft 4, the latter rotating in the usual manner. This shaft 4 carries a handle 5, the end of which is secured in an opening 7 in the end of the angular extension or arm 6. A set-screw 8 serves to securely clamp the attachment to the handle 5. The
arm 6 is formed integral with the upper face of a cylindrical casing 9, in said casing 9 being secured a spring-pressed plunger 10,which extends through the casing-and is encircled by the coil-spring 1l, also arranged within the casing. The end of the spring-pressed plunger 10 is bifurcated, as at 12, and in which is pivotally secured the handle 14, this handle being fulcrumed at 15 in lu'gs 16, carried by the casing 9.
The operation of myimproved attachment is as follows: When it is desired to operate the damper, the handle 14 is depressed, thereby depressing the coil-spring 11, and the end of the plunger 10 will be released from engagement with the stove, thus allowing the attachment tov be turned with the handle 5 of the damper and permit the adjustment which will open or close the damper to any desired degree, and when the operating-handle 14v is released the spiral spring will again expand,
.which will force the plunger 10 against the face ofV the stove, thereby locking the damper in the desired position.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the-accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what .I claim as new,`and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an attachment for dampers, the combination of a damper and the damper-casing,
`a handle secured to said damper, a casing, a
spring-pressed plunger within the casing, an
Vangular arm secured to the casing and having an opening-in its end to receive the darnper-handle, and means for retracting the said plunger.
2. In an attachment for dampers and the like, the combination with the damper hav- I ing a handle, a casing attached to said handle, aspring-pressed plunger secured in said casing and adapted to normally engage the damper-casing, and an operating-handle fullcrurned upon said casing for retracting said spring-pressed plunger, substantially as described. 4
3. In an attachment for dampers, thecombination with the damper, and a handle secured thereto, of a casing, an angular extension on one end of the said casing and having an opening in its end to receive the damperhandle, a, thumb-screw secured in the said extension adjacent the opening therein, a. spring-pressed plunger secured in said casing and adapted to normally engage the damperoasng, and an operating-handle fulorumed upon said easing for retraotang said plunger.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES R. STOVER.
