,Be it known that I, TANbY MEADoIgja citizen of the United States, residing .at Westmoreland, in the county of Summer and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Automatic Stove-Dampers, and I do hereby declaref the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description or the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art tofwhich it appertains to makeand use the same.
This invention relates to antomatic stove dampers, the principal objectof the invention being to secure a uniform temperature in a room, and to utilize the expansion and contractionof the stove pipe for setting the damper which regulates the temperature.

The operating rod 5 is provided with a rib 7, and the-opening in the pipe through which the operating rod 5 passes is providedwith a key hole-slot,
so that the'rib Tmay'be pulledout or pushed in beyond the pipe in order to permit the damper to be turned independently of the automatic attachment. A spring 8 encircles the operating rod 5 outside the pipe, one end of said. spring bearing against the handle ,6 and the other end against a cap 9 which bears against a dial or disk 10, the latter being provided with a radial slot 11 and indicating marks 12 at the side of said slot. Wl110l1 projects through the slot 11, and the lower end of the lever 13 is offset and is pivoted at 15 to a suitable stud V or bearing 16. The ofiset end 17 of the lever 13 is pivotally connected at 18 to a rod 19, said rod 19 being mounted in a guide or strap 20 secured to the plate 2, whilethe lower end of the rod '19 passes through a bearing member21, and may slide therein and be adjusted in any desired position by means of a binding screw 22. An operating handle .23 preferably formed of some non-heat conducting material is connected to the bearing 21 at its'upper end and the lower end is mounted in a collar 24 atthe lower In the disk or diallO is an indicating hole 25, and when the groove 27 in the cap 9 is immediately under thehole 25, the rib 7 on the operating rod 5 maybe pushed in or withdrawn through the key hole slot in the pipe 1 and in the plate 2 and disk 10. When the handle is pushed in so that the rib 7 is inside the pipe, the damper 4 may be used independently of the automatic attachment. When the rib is outside the pipe and engaged with the key hole slot in the disk 10, the movement of the disk will also move the damper. The disk 10 isalso provided with end of the pipe 1.

The operation of the invention may be briefly described as follows: The pin 14 may be adjusted in theslot 11 to any desired temperature which it is required to maintain in the room. When the heat is excessive, the pipe 1 is expanded, and this will rotate the disk and with it the damper 4, and the damper will be practically closed. When the temperature drops to a few degrees below the desired temperature, the
' damper will be gradually opened until it attains the required temperature when it will be again closed and so on during the time that fuel is placed in the stove or heater.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a damper regulator made in accordancewith this invention is comparatively simple in construction, will be economical in the saving of fuel, and will give the desired temperature and maintain it in a room at all times when there is fire in the stove or heater.
Various changes may be made in the details of constructionv without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claims;
What is claimed is 1. An automatic damper comprising a long pipe, a damper mounted in said pipe and'provided with a handle, a spring mounted on the operating rod of the damper outside the pipe, a rib on said operating rod extending through a key hole slot in the pipe, a plate provideclwith a key hole slot through which said rib extends, and a dial or disk mounted on the operating rod and also provided with a key hole slot for said rib, a spring mounted on the operating rod and bearing against the handle at one end and against the disk at the other end, whereby said damper may be used independently of the attachment, a lever provided with a pin extending'through a slot in said dial, means for adjusting said dial to required temperature, and means operated by the expansionand contraction of the pipe for setting the damper at the desired position to a give the required temperature.
