UNITED 1 PATENT --OFFICE.
ELBERT'O. HASKINS, RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY.
SECTIONAL HEATING-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION f mit i ea r Letters Patent No. 7o7, 22e, dated'August 19, 1902. Application filed November 1,1901- Serial No. 80,795. (No'inodeld 1 To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT O. HASKINS, a 'citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rutherford inthe countyof Bergen and State of New jersey, haveinventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Heating-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in sectional heating-boilers, .and especially to that class of boilers in which the several sections are brought in communication with each other by means of push-nipples. In boilers of this kind it has not been possible to cut out any one section that is, to interrupt its communication with other sections in case this one section-sprung a leakor was damaged in any other'way, and thus the entire boiler had to be put out of service, causing great inconvenience and lossof time and money. r
The objectof my inventionis toprovidea new and improved sectional 1boiler in wh'ich the sections are connected by push-nipples and in which the above defect is avoided in a simple, reliable, cheap, and convenient manner. i
In the accompanyingdrawings, in which like letters of reference indicate likepart's in all the figures, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the upper part of one section of my improved boilerl Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modification. Fig. 4 is a Vertical transverse sectional view through a series of sections, showing the construction of Fig. 3.
The cast-iron boiler-sections A, which may have any desired cross-section or shape, are provided at the top (and also at each side at the bottom in the usualway) with a'slightlytapering opening, B in each face for receiv ing the ends'ofipush-nipples O for bringing the several sections in communication with each other in the well-known manner, so that the water and'steain can readily pass from one section into another, and thus the proper circulationof water maintained in the boiler. In my improved section the said openings B in each section A are surrounded bya partition D, extending from one wall a. of the section to the other wall a, and thus forming a I screwed.
through its top with an opening E, which is preferably screw threaded and provided with an external neck F, so as to give it greater depth. Above such opening the section has the usual screw-threaded opening G,which can be closed I s by a plug H'or into which a riser-pipe is Similar openings and plugs are provided at the lower ends of the legs of the section. In-case asection'A-is tobe cutout for any reason whatever the plugs H are removed and-a plugis screwed into the opening E of each partition D inQthe section and the plugs H are replaced. No water or steam can now pass into'this; section but the communication between the other sections isnot interfered with, as. steam or water can pass throughithe space bounded by the partition D in the section cutout from'the two sections at each side of the one thatfhaslbeen cut out.
In the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4 tubular, and part of the edge wall of the section A forms the balance of the compartment thus formed.
An opening J is formed in the bottom of the partition D and an opening K at each side, and these can be closed by the screw-plugs L and M, respectively, when the section is to be cut out, the result being the same as when the tubular partition D is provided.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V In a heating-boiler, the combination with a series of sections provided. with openings in their faces for establishing communication with adjacent sections, push nipplesinserted in said openings and a 'par tition within each section, forming a compartment around said the partition D is made substantially semi-' openings and push-nipples, and extending from one wall to the other of said section, and made integral therewith, this partition having an opening for establishing communication between the compartment formed by New York and State of New York, this 16th said partition and the interior of the section day of October, A. D. 1901.
within which said compartment is formed, 1 said sections each having an opening in the ELBER1 HASKINS' 5 edge wall adjacent to the opening in said par- Witnesses:
tition, substantially as set forth. OSCAR F. GUNZ,
Signed at New York city, in the county of 1 F. O. AFFELD, Jr.
