PATENT OFFICE-S Jonn R- JECKLIN, or NEWBU-RGH, NEW YORK.
COMBINED. CURB AND1G UT-TER BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,1 15, dated August 19, 1902. Application filed May 1, 1902. Serial No. 105,427- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JOHN R. J ECKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Curb and GutterBlock; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined curb and gutter block made of any material which can be used as a substitute for stone, which is simple,'cheap, and effective, can be readily placed in position, and when so placed forms a complete curb and gutter and serves'to maintain the street-pavement and sidewalk in their relative positions.
My invention will be understood by 'reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same lotters throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a number of my combined curb and gutter blocks in position, showing the outer edge of the sidewalk resting upon the top of the curb portion of my improved blocks. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of my improved curb and gutter blocks. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the center of the gutter portion of a number of blocks. Fig. 4 is a transverseverticalsection of part of a sidewalk and road-bed, showing my-combined' curb and gutter block in position. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical section of part of a sidewalk and road-bed, showing a modified form of my combined curb and gutter block in position.
A indicates the perpendicular body portion of the combined curb and gutter block, from the center of the outer face of which extends the horizontally disposed gutter portion B. The bodyA is provided at one end with a vertical flangeA', and at the front of the opposite end is arranged the vertical flange A ,as shown in Fig. 2. Theseflanges areadapted to overlap each other and form'close'joints between the blocks when set in position, as shown by the broken lines in Fig. 3. The body A may also be provided with a longitudinal lip A", arranged at the back and near the top of said body A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5. The lip A is adapted to receive the outer edge of the sidewalk (J to form a flush joint, as shown in Fig-5. The top of the gutterportion B is slightly concaved, so as to form atrough to carry oi the water when theblocks are in position. At one end of the gutter portion 13 is arranged a lip B, which is adapted to overlap the conjoining block, as shown in Fig. 3. The gutter portion B may also be provided on the upper side of the outer edge with a longitudinal groove or flange B, as shown inFigs. 2 and,5. This form ofblock is particularly adapted for use when asphalt isused upon the road-bed, in which case the I asphalt may rest uponthe groove or flange B", as shown in Fig. 5, thus forming a smoothandalmost imperceptible joint.
In Fig. 4., Drepresents theTblocks used in paving the road-bed. This view also shows the relative positions of the paving-blocks and the gutter portion B of my improved curb and gutter block when same is in position. In
'Fig. 5, Drepresents the asphalt used upon the road-bed and shows the manner in which it rests'upon 'the groove or flange B of the gutter portionBof the combined curb and gutter block when same isin position.
My combination curband gutter blocks can be made of any desired size, are readily placed in position, and when so placed form a complete curb and gutter. The lower portion of the body A is adapted to be buried in the earth, while the gutter portion Brests upon the surface, thereby furnishing a-strong resistance. to the action of' -the frost or the growth of roots, and, together with the close joints formed by the overlapping of the flanges of the conjoining blocks, holds the curb and gutter in its proper. position.
My improved curb and gutter blocks can be used in connection with any form of sidewalk or road-bed, and can be used to an equal advantage in connection with a gravel'sidewalk and dirt road-bed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire-to'secure' by Letters'Patent,is--- 1. A combined curb and gutter block comprising a perpendicular body portion having a flange on the opposite sides of each of the ends of such portion, a horizontally-disposed projection extending outwardly from the center of the face of the body, which projection wardly from the center of the face of the body is slightly concaved on its upper surface and portion, which projection is slightly concaved which projection is provided on one end with on its upper surface and which projection is a lip, and has on the upper and outer edge a provided on one end With a lip, and has on longitudinal groove, all substantially as dethe upper and outer edge a groove, all subscribed and shown. stantially as described and shown.
