Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1913.
Application filed July 8, 1912. Serial No. 707,490.
T 0 all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, FRANK F. FARGO, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented a certain new and useful Combination Vehicle-Track and Curbstone, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to an article of manufacture adapted for use as a track or runway for vehicles, especially automobiles, or as a curb stone, and Which may be so constructed as to provide a conduit for the reception of telephone, telegraph or electric wires and the like.
The invention is preferably made in units, each the counter part of every other part, and all adapted to be laid together end to end, with an improved interlocking device to prevent their longitudinal or lateral movements relative to each other.
In order that others may fully understand my invention, I have shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings one practical form or embodiment thereof for purposes of illustration, which I will now describe.
In the drawings,- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one and a fraction units of the invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary face view at the end of one of the units to show the formation to receive the interlocking means; and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view showing my invention set up as a vehicle track, with interlocking and spacing or gage members therebetween.
Referring now to the drawings, I will describe one of the units which are capable of being assembled and connected together for the purpose of forming vehicle tracks, or for the purpose of serving as curb-stones at opposite sides of a street. I prefer to make each unit of an lar form, in cross section, as indicated, an if made of concrete, which material, to reinforce it with bars 11 extendin therethrough. The upper face is of curved or concaved form, and is preferably provided with a concaved sheet metal wearing face 2, embedded into the material, as indicated. 1 also provide said units with conduits, as 3, which serve, whether said units are set up as a curb-stone, or as a track, as an effective and continuous conduit for the reception of telephone, te1egraph or electric wires, or any other of the purposes for which such conduits are or mav be used. Each unit is preferably the coun terpart of every other part or unit and is so constructed that when assembled or set up they fit closely together end to end. In the form here shown the ends are made square and are provided with grooves, as 4, Fig. 2, for the reception of interlocking bolts or rods, as 5. In the face and at the back of each unit, near its ends, are sockets 6 adapted to receive the inturned ends of interlocking plates 7, by means of which, with the bolts or rods 5, said units are locked together end to end and in register with each other. I prefer that the interlocking plates 7 be also provided with an underlip, as 7 to rest underneath the meeting ends of said units as a foundation therefor.
In Fig. 3 I have shown how my invention 1s set up to form a vehicle track, such as is used for running automobiles into garages, although a track or runway of any length can be made thereof. The units are connected end to end, as illustrated in Fig. 1, in two lines facing each other at a space apart, with spacing or gage bars 8 connecting the same, and holding them in proper relationship with each other.
I am aware that changes can be made in the embodiment of the invention here shown and described for urposes of illustration and I do not, there ore, limit the invention to the particular form here shown, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a vehicle track, in combination, a series of angular shaped masonry blocks having concaved track surfaces and outside, upwardly projecting flange-like portions, and adapted to be connected end to end, interlocking plates having inturned ends and underlips and adapted to fit into and under the meeting ends of said blocks, and connecting bolts adapted to fit between the meeting ends of said blocks and to hold said plates in interlocking relationship with said blocks, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a vehicle track, in combination, a series of angular shaped masonry blocks having concaved track surfaces and outside, upwardly projecting flange-like portions, and having conduits formed longitudlnally thereof in their corners, said blocks being adapted to be connected end to end, with said conduits in alinement with each other, interlocking plates having inturned ends and underlips and adapted to fit into and under the meeting ends of said blocks, and connecting bolts adapted to fit between the meeting ends of said blocks and to said plates in FRANK F. FARGO.
