Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb..13, 1912.
Application filed September- 7, 1909. Serial No. 516,580.
To all whbmz't may concern:
Be it known that I,WILL1AM' A. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county 5 of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Deformed Reinforcing-Bars for Concrete; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to 'the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in deformed reinforcing bars for concrete, as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates a round bar embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles with Fig." 1. Fig. '3 is a section taken on line 44 of Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings: the figures illustrate a round bar embodying my invention. Said bar 1, is provided with bond- 'ng projectionsor lugs 2,.arranged in pairs staggered for the lengthfof the bar, each of said pairs being equal in length to the semi-circumference of the bar. Each pair of projections or lugs 2 is spaced apart to provide a central bonding key or space 3, provided with abrupt shoulders t-5, and one or more bonding spaces 6, of less depth than the key 3,-may be provided, if desired. In the construction shown, the concrete firmly bonds in the key 8, and, owing to the abrupt shoulders 4 or 5, the concrete prevents slippage and affords a very rigid construction. If desired the lugs or projections 2 may be divided into more than two sections, and in any event the bar is not weakened as the keys are provided in the lugs only. The diagonally or dia. metrically opposite abrupt shoulders 14 or 15, afl'ord excellent bonding faces and serve to rigidly anchor the bars in the concrete.
Of course, any shape or size bar may be employed and various details of construction may be varied withoutdeparting from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not desire to limit myself otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
/ I claim as my invention? A reinforcing bar or rod having a series of transverse projections or lugs arranged in groups that are oppositely disposed on said bar, the members of said groups being extended each half-way around said bar or rod and being of even height throughout, and in staggered relation transversely with respect to each other and alternately disposed, the members of each of said groups being in alinement longitudinally of said bar or rod and being provided with bonding spaces.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
