Description
@uitrit gisten @latent @fitta JAMES W. AIKIN vAND JOHN H. STONE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYL- VANIA.
. Letters Patent No. 70,676, dateolnNovenzber 12, 1867.
IMPBOVED NOTE-PROOF CASE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN: f,
' Be a known that we, JAMES tin-Arm and Jona H. STONE, of the city of Philadelphia, in the state of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Moth-Proof Cases; and we do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
The object of our improvement is to produce a sheet-metal case for receiving and preserving a ladys muti', cape, and other'furs from access or damage by moths; and our invention consists in the combination ofrtwo or more concentric cylindrical apartments connected together by an annular bottom plate, the central cylinder being made of perforated Vsheet metal or Wire gauze, and-provided with a like perforated cover and a perforated V diaphragm, and also opening through the bottom plate of the case, so as to admit of its being readily leorked up and cemented air-tight from the outside of the case; and the outer cylinder being provided with a cap which is made to slip accurately over its upper end, and the joint then made air-tight by meansl of an elastic band-ring of vulcanized gum sprung over the same after the furs are inserted, all substantially as hereinafter described.
' Referring to the drawing, A is the central cylinder, B the external cylinder, and C an intervening cylinder. The central cylinder A is made of perforated sheet metal, or of wire gauze, h'as a slip-cap, aand a diaphragm, a", of the same material. Its lower end opens into n circular recess, b', in the centre of the bottom of the case, as represented in the drawing, which. recess b isiadapted for a cork stopper and cement, (as indicated by the faint lines,) so that it can be readily closed up air-tight when the case is put in use. The external cylinder B -forms the outside of the case, has a close bottom and sides, and a close-fitting cap, b, which slips on over its upper end. vThe band-ring b is cut transversely off from atube of vulcanized gum, thus producing a, ring .which can be easily sprung around over the joint formed around the outside of the cylinder B by the lower edge of the cap bf, when the cylindery is to be closed air-tight, as shown in the drawing. The intervening cylinder C is shorter than the cylinder B, is left fully open at its upper end, and is iixed vertically to the annular bottom of the case, as represented in the drawing. y
The case is prepared and used in the following manner: A'lump of gum-camphor is i'irst enclosed in the perforated cylinder A; the ladys muil is thenslipped down around the cylinder A, and her cape and other smaller furs placed in the annular chamber or space whichisbetween C and B. The cap b is now applied, and the elastic band-ring bf" then sprung around over the joint formed by the said cap b, and the outside ofthe cylinder B, as represented in the drawing. The case is now laid upon its side, and, after remaining thus with its open ybottom exposed to the air for an hour or two, forthe purpose of causing a general circulation ofthe camphorated air through the furs, the opening b inthe lower end of A is to be corked up tightly, and then cemented over with wax, so as to close it air-tight, thus enclosing the said furs securely in a permanent manner in an atmosphere thoroughly impregnated with the camphor, elleetually destroying the life of the moth, ifpresent, and preventing any subsequent vitalization of any of the eggs of the insect which may be inthe fors This is a very easily operated, inexpensive, and effective mothproof case for a ladys furs.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following, viz:
We claim a sheet-metal moth-proof case for a ladyfs furs, having the perforated central cylinder A, and the recess b', in combination with the cylinder B and lthe elastic band-ring Zr, the said parts being constructed, arranged, and combined to operate together substantially as and for the purpose described.
' J' AMES W. AIKIN,
JOHN H. STONE.
