Be it known that I, HOMER WISE,a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flushing, in the county of Queens and State of New York, haveinventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Vouchers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to vouchers and its main object is to provide a voucher embodying means for containing the usual bills or statements,account memoranda, and other papers relating to an account or accounts to which the voucher corresponds. r

As is well known, the various bills, monthly statements, charge memoranda, rito., relating to a single account, even when the latter is a Small one for which but few papers are required, are usually ofvarying sizes, both as to the length and as to the width thereof, and the printing on the bills or other memoranda of account sometimes runsthe long way and sometimes the short wayof the sheet, the result being that when a large number of these papers are assembled they form an irregular group thedierent elements of which have generally been formed into a regular group by pasting them on blank sheets of a uniform maximum size and afterward pinning or otherwise attaching these separate sheets to the voucher. This system of keeping the papers of one or more accounts together is incon- Venient, increases the space occupied by the papers, and involves a great deal of extra labor in bringing all of the papers to a uniform size. My present invention is especially designed and intended to provide a means for overcoming these disadvantages the labor incident to the pasting of the papers thereto.

l consider within `the scope of 'my invention any voucher so formed as to constitute a combined voucher and pocket or envelop; but I prefer to make use of a voucher having a connected iiap and pocket, the iiap being preferably at one side and the pocket at the other side -of a fold-line, the usual construction being that in which a iiap and a pocket are connected along aV substantially central fold-line. K 4' In Figs. l, 2, and 3, V illustrates one form of voucher embodying my invention. It consists of an approximately rectangular sheets, constituting the voucher proper, and a connected portion p at one edge thereofand combined therewith in such a manner as to form a pocket 5, Vin which all of the various bills, memoranda, dac., relating to the account may be kept. This portion 1J may b e shaped and connected to the sheet o in any desired man* ner to form the space 5; but I prefer to make a combined voucher and pocket from a single sheet of material, usually paper, having side and end tabs or fiaps, such as 6, 7', and 7', folded over according to the usual mode of forming an envelop from an envelop-blank. The sheet fu preferably constitutes the Voucher proper and may have printed thereon the usual voucher formula or account-classifying headd ings, the printing beginning in this case on the front of that part 8 of the sheet which forms one side of the pocket and ending on the front of the part 9, forming in this case a iiap which can be folded over the back por Fig. 2 isa similar view illustrating the pocket tion of the voucher along the fold-line 10, which, it will be seen, is in this case the central longitudinal line of the sheet v. Thus all of the items of expense noted on the various papers contained in the pocket 5 and relating to the account are in plain View on the outside of the envelop-voucher and can be readily referred to Without removing the papers themselves from the envelop.

Au important feature of my invention is the provision in connection with the voucher and its pocket of a receipt covering the account to which the papers of the voucher itself relate. This receipt is preferably disposed at the opposite side of the sheet o from that which carries the voucher formula and will usually have the fold-line of the voucher at one edge thereof-in this case at the lower side of the receipt. A suitable form of receipt is shown herein and is indicated b v fr, it being in this case printed on one side of the flap f of the combined voucher and envelop., Hence my invention is a combined voucher and receipt having a pocket or envelop the last of which serves to hold all of the papers of the account, the iirst to contain all of the individual items of the account,

. and the second to preserve as a part of the iinal and permanent record of the account associated with all the papers relating thereto a receipt in full discharge of the balance due as disclosed by the-voucher and the papers contained in the pocket 5.

In Fig. 4c I have illustrated a modification of the invention in which the iiap of my improved voucher is formed, as shown at f', with corners somewhat rounded, and this voucher, which is designated by V', may, if desired, be made of very strong paper or paper and cloth to receive the many papers of a large account. This type of voucher forms a very strong filing-envelop, which may be filled with papers and afterward have the flap y fastened to the body of the voucher in some suitable manner, as by means of a tape or string 15, secured to the voucher at some suitable point and tied, as indicated at l5.

The vouchers hereinbefore described open at the long sides thereof; but in many cases it may be found preferable to make use of envelop vouchers or liles which open at the end, as shown, for eXample,in Fig. 5,in which I have illustrated a voucher V,the fold-line of which is shown at l0 and is transverse to the long side of the voucher. Here the connected portion p, which is attached to the main sheet of the voucher and forms therewith a pocket, is shaped in a dierent manner from the corresponding portions of the vouchers shown in Figs. l to 4, inclusive; but it coperates with the voucher-sheet and with a receipt (notshown) in substantially the same Way. Here the iiapf need not extend the full length of the pocket of the voucher, but is preferably considerably shorter and is narrowed at its end in such a manner as to permit it to be passed through'a slit 16 in the part 29, and thus close the file. The placing of the printed matter of the voucher formula is analogous in this modification to the positionings shown in the other views.

Whatever may be the form of my improved voucher, it constitutes in all cases a receptacle in which all of the papers may be kept, and as the vouchers when folded and filled with papers will all be of uniform size it will be evident that they can be filed away in the ordinary manner in filing-cabinets for reference, the uniform manner in which they are backed with the voucher formula facilitating this.

I am aware that envelops and files of various shapes and sizes have printed thereon various formulae for many purposes and that some of these when so printed form combination articles of each of which a pocket is an important element; but I am not aware that any of the articles so formed is intended for or is capable of use as a voucher, and my invention is limited strictly to ythe one lspecific article known as a voucher and used especially by bookkeepers as a means for classifying under the appropriate headings the vag rious accounts to which the expenses and other disbursements'of a business-house are properly chargeable, the essential dierence between my envelop-voucher and vouchers of the ordinary type being that the envelopvoucher is especially adapted for holding the bills containing tlieitems making up the totals of the account or accounts indicated on the voucher to which such items are chargeable.

What I claim isl. An envelop-voucher adapted to contain a plurality of bills or statements of account, and comprising two parts one of which is a voucher proper having a column of accountclassifying headings indicating expense items of different naturesto which headings the items of said bills or statements are chargeable, and the other of which is a connected portion forming with said voucher an envelop or pocket.
