UNITED STAT S PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL L. RICHARDSON, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLOTHES-DRYING ATTACHMENT FOR RANGE-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Pate nt N 0. 705,295, dated Ju1y 22, 1902.
Application filed April 13, 1901. berial-No. 65,670 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,"SAMUEL L. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes Drying Attachments for Range-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clothes-drying attachments-for range-boilers; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved device of this class whereby clothes may be conveniently supported in proximity to the heated surface of range-boilers and may be thus effectively dried.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a range-boiler provided with my improved clothes-drying attachment, the latter being illustrated in operation. Fig. 2 is a detail top plan View of the improved attachment. Fig. 3 is a detail-transverse sectional view of a portion of the clothes-drying attachment, taken upon a horizontal plane. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of a bracket-arm and keeper, the latter being partly in section.
Corresponding parts in all-the figures are denoted by thesame reference characters.
-Referring to the drawings, my improved clothes-drying attachment comprises a body portion which is secured around the boiler 2 at any desired height and is provided with a plurality of adjustable bracket-arms 3, whereby the clothes may be suspended in proximity to the outer heated surface of the boiler.
In the preferred form of construction my improved clothes-drying attachment consists 1 of a body portion which is in general contour annular in form and closely fits the outersurface of the boiler. The body portion is provided with separable end portions which are provided with connection-means whereby the body portion may be firmly clamped around the boiler in operative position. A convenient means for regulating the size of the body portion consists of adjustable means for fastening the overlapping end portions of the two members of the body portion. By means of such overlapping end portions and the adjustable fastening means therefor the body portion of my clothes-drying attachment may be fitted to any standard size of boiler. Each preferred form of construction consists of a fiat flexible band or strip of suitable metal, one end of each of which constitutes one of the overlapping .end portions of such member. The other ends of the strips constitute the separable end portions of the body portion, and said ends "are formed each into an outwardly-projecting lip 14, with respect to which the connection means operate. Said connection means may consistof a bolt 15, which is passed through openings formed, respectively, in the lips 14, and a not 1 7 may be screwed onto the bolt 15 after its passage through the openings to effectively clamp the body portion around the boiler and maintain the same firmly in operative position. means fordeterminiug the size of-the bodyportion may consist of short bolts'18, which are adapted to be. passed through registering openings 19 in'the overlapping endsol" the strips and -to receive nuts 20, whereby the overlapping end portions of the members of the body portion may be effectively united in predetermined relation. As illustrated, each of the ends of the strips is provided with a plurality of openings 19,which openings are so arranged that they may receive in registration the bolts 18in such overlapping relations of the ends as shall adapt the body portion to boilers of the several standard diameters.
' The adjustable bracket-arms 3 are carried by keepers which are slidably mounted upon the. body portion,-and each of said keepers preferably consists of asinglemetallic blank the centralportion of which-is formed into a socket 23 and the end portions 24 of which are bent or folded inwardly about the respective members of the body portion. The sockets 23 of the keepers thus extend vertically across the outer face of the body portion in convenient position to receive the bracket-arms, each of which latter may consist of a single length of stiff wire or rod whichis bent at one end to form afinger 25, which may be readily 'fitted into one of the sockets 23. The opposite end of each of the lengths of wire may be'bent'to'form a head .26 at the outer end of the respective bracketin its clothes-supporting function. The
' of the members of the body portion in the The arm, which head will assist the bracket-arm bracket-arms 3 are thus detachable from the keepers and may be shifted from one to the other of the latter, as desired.
The operation and advantages of my improved clothes-drying attachment for rangeboilers will be readily understood. The entirety may be with facility fitted to a rangeboiler by relatively separating the end portions of the body portion and passing said body portion around the boiler. The connection means are then connected with the end portions of the body portion, and the entirety is thus clamped tightly around the boiler at the required height. If the annular body portion is of too great or too small diameter for the boiler to which the attachment is to be applied, the overlapping end portions of the members of the body portion are relatively adjusted as required, and the means for determining the size of the body portion are correspondingly secured in position with respect to said overlapping end portions. The bracketarms 3 with the attachment in operative position project radially from the boiler, and the clothes may be conveniently suspended from the same in proper proximity to the heated surface of the boiler. The radiated heat of the boiler may thus be conveniently utilized for the drying of clothes, and space otherwise encumbered by the drying clothes is thus left clear and open for other purposes. This latter feature is of marked advantage in laundry-rooms and kitchens of relatively limited size. The bracket-arms 3 may be adjusted upon the body portion into any convenient and desired relative arrangement. The entire device is simple, strong, and durable in construction, convenient in use, and easy of attachment to or detachment from the boiler, and its use is attended by material economy in the heat required to dry the clothes and in the space occupied by the latter while drying.
I do not desire to be understood aslimiting myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An improved clothes-drying attachment for range-boilers, comprising a body portion which is formed to fit the outer surface of the boiler, means for securing the same in operative position, and a bracket-arm adj ustably carried by said body portion, said body portion being provided with a slidably-mounted keeper consisting of a metallic blank the end portions of which are folded inwardly about the body portion and the central portion of which is formed into a socket in which the inner end of the bracket-arm is fitted.
2. An improved clothes-drying attachment for range-boilers, comprising a body portion which is formed to fit the outer surface of the boiler and consists of a plurality of strips or hands provided with overlapping ends and with means for securing said overlapping ends in predetermined relation, means for securing said strips in position to clamp the body portion to the boiler, and a bracket-arm adj ustably carried by the body portion, said body portion being provided with a slidablymounted keeper consisting of a metallic blank the end portions of which are folded inwardly about the body portion and the central portion of which is formed into a socket in which the inner end of the bracket-arm is fitted.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL L. RICHARDSON.
