W. J. ARMSTRONG AND CHARLES BRO WNE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 70,498, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN ANGHORS.
TOl ALLWVHOM IT MAY CONCllRN;A
Bo it known that we, W. J. ARMSTRONG and CHARLES BnowNE, of Brooklyn, in tho county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Self-Clearing Anchor; and we do hereby declare that l the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot`, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the samcQreference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 is an edge viewof our improved anchor, parts being broken away te show the construction.
Figure 2 is a side View of the same, parts being broken away to show the construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding part-s.
Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved anchor, strong, durable, and simple in construction, and which shall be so constructed as to clear itself should it heeonie fouled; and it consists in the construction et' the crown, shank, and stock of the anchor, and in the manner in which said parts are attached to each other, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the shank ofthe anchor, upon the lower end of which is formed a tenen, a', the shoulders of which incline in cach direction from the central point, as shown in fig. 2, so that the crown B of the anchor may rock upon the said tchou to enable the linkes C to take a surer hold upon the ground. .The crown B is made with a slot through it to receive and fit upon the tenen a' of the shank A, the ends of said slot being inclined outward in each direction from the centre, as shown in dotted lines in iig. 2, to enable the said crown to rock upon the tenen 'Without getting out of its proper relative position. It will be observed that when the fluke C of the anchor has hold of the ground, the edges of the crown B rest against the inclined shoulders of the shank A, and the inclined ends of the slot through thc crown B rest against the edges of the tenen a', so as to give the connection great rmness and strength.l The crown B is secured in place upon the tenen a ot' the shank A by the blocks D, which are riveted, welded, brazed, or otherwise securely and iirmly attached to the sides of the lower end of thesaid tenen a. The upper ends of the blocks D are inclined outward from their central points, as shown in iig. f2, in the saine manner as the shoulders ot' said tenen. The stock E is made in two parts, the inner end 'olf each part having a tenon formed upon it which passes through a mortise formed in the upper end of the shank A for its reception. The parts of the stock E are secured in place in the shank A by blocks F riveted, welded, brazed, or otherwise securely attached to the side of the said tenons. The mortise through the upper part of the shank A is .so formed, and the shoulders of the tenons and the inn-er ends of the blocks F are so inclined, that the outer ends of the parts of the stock may incline upward to allow the cable to slip 01T the stock should it become fouled, but they cannot move downward further than to be at right angles to the shank A. This construction allows the crown B and upper end of the shank A, where they are weakened by the mortses,
- to be made of any desired thickness, so as to be of any desired strength.
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. Attaching the crown B tothe shank A bypassing a tenen formed upon the lower end of said shank through a mortise formed in the said crown, and securing them in place by blocks D firmly attached to the sideA L oi' the projecting ond of said tenen, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. 2. Forming the stock E in two parts, and attaching them to the upper end of the shank A bypassing tenons formed upon the inner ends of said parts through a inortise formed in the upper end of said shauh, and securing them in place by means of blocks F rinly attached to the projecting ends oi said tenons, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
The above specication of our invention signed by us this 18th day of September, 1867.
