UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR D. JOHNSON, OF CLARE, MICHIGAN.
BAG-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 704,833, dated July 15, 1902.
Application filed November 21, 1901. Serial No. 83,142. (No model.)
xo pertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to bag-holders. The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, compara I 5 tively inexpensive of production, and which when not in use may be folded up into small compass for storage or transportation, and which when in use will securely hold the bag in proper position for filling.
\Vith this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularlypoin ted out in the In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the bag-holder when set up for use. Fig. 2 is a side View illustrating the bag-holder when folded up 0 for storage or transportion, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the bag-mouth frame and spring clamping-jaws.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 denote two sets of legs connected together, the legs of one set being connected together by crosspiece 3 and the legs of both sets being connected at their upper ends by a pivot at, which also pivotally connects the upper ends of said legs with the bag-mouth-holding frame,
in the present instance shown in the form of an annulus 5, around which the mouth of'the bag is adapted to be placed in the act of filling. When in position for use, as shown in mediate portions of which are formed with a loop 11, which adds elasticity to the spring.
In use the mouthof the bag is placed around the annulus and the spring-bails are grasped by the loops 11 and swung downwardly, thus securely clamping the mouth of the bag to the annulus. The loops 1]. serve a twofold purpose-namely, as a means for operating the bails and for allowing the bails to accommodate bags of different thicknesses, as will be readily understood by referring to the drawings. r
When not in use, the hooks 6 may be disengaged from the eyes 7 and the two sets of legs swung together and the annulus, with its bails, tilted until they become parallel with the legs.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure-by'Letters Patent, is-- I 1. In a bag-holder, the combination with a suitable bag-mouth-supporting frame, of j aws "pivoted to said frame and adapted to engage the opposite sides thereof and clamp the neck of the bag thereto, each jaw being longitudinally 'expansible to compensate for the bunching of the necks of bags of I different thicknesses of material of which the necks are formed, substantially as set forth.
2. In a bag-holder, the combination witha suitable bag-mouth-supporting frame, ofj aws pivoted to said frame and adapted to engage the opposite sides thereof, said jaws being formed intermediate their pivoted ends with springs to permit of the expansion of said jaws and to serve the additional function of handles by means of which the jaws may be operated, substantially as set forth.
3. In a bag-holder, the combination with a In testimony whereof I have hereunto set suitable support'ingframe comprising two my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- 10 sets of hinged legs, of a bag-mouth-holding nesses. frame ivoted t0 and connectin the u er r 5 ends o the legs, and spring-jaws? pivote zl to ARFHUR JOHNSON the bag-mouth-holding frame and adapted to Witnesses: engage the opposite sides thereof, substan- A. S. TOUCH, tially as set forth. LESLIE RAMEY.
