Description

Quinn-v1" @aient @fitte 1)..A. DIXON, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
Letters Patent No. 70,425, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVED SADDLE-TREE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY, CONCERN: 1
Be it known that I, D. A. DIXON, ofthe city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in SaddleTrees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,v and to the letters of reference thereon.
This invention relates to an improved construction oi' the 'pommel, wherebyit is extended far enough forward toreceive and sustain the connecting-belt of the saddle-bags, thereby enabling the lanimalto support the Weight ofthe said bags directly over the shoulders, which is the `strongest part of thebody, and not over the small of the back, as formerly. The bottom part ot" the pommel is also improved by the addition of a metallic loop, from which to suspend'the Carbine. The invention also relates to en improv-ed construction of the cantle, whereby its 'ends ,are rounded olf on their forward parts, sovas to form an easy curv'e between them and the side bars, thus enabling a trooper to swing the leg back asin the use of the sabre, without unpleasamtly pressing against the ends of the cantle. Iron staples are also inserted in the cantlc-plate for the cloak-straps, instead of using straps passed through mortises in the cantle, which always wear the rider unpleasantly.
To enable those skilled i'n the art to make and use my improved saddle-tree, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1, ofthe drawings', represents a side elevation of the improved tree.
Figure 21's a plan of it.
The pommel A is attached to the side hars B, in the usual manner, and the improvement in its construction consists in the extension of it further forward than the old-style treeswere mad-@so as to form a. shelf, a, over which to carry the saddle-bags. There is also an iron loop, a', at the bottom end of the pommel, on either side, for the attachment of thecarbine of a trooper. The cantle C is improved by rounding off the corners c c, as shown in the drawings, instead of allowing them to extend forward to an acute angle, as4 shown by dotted lines el. Iron staplcsgz, are also added to the back part of the cantle for the attachment of the cloak-straps,
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1 1'. The combination and arrangement ofthe loop a' with the pommel A.
2. -I claim the construction of the cantlc C. substantially as described and set forth.
D. A. DIXON.
