COMBlNED LETTER-SHEET AND ENVELOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters IPatent No. 704,153, dated July 8, 1902 Application filed September 12, 1901. Serial No. 75,152. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY V. 'WAGONER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a'resident of Bensonhurst, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Letter-Sheet and Envelop, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combined lettersheet and envelop.
The object of my invention is to produce such an article in a more economical manner both as to a saving of material and labor in cutting and gumming.
My invention also has for its object to provide such an article with a safety device which serves to prevent the envelop being surreptitiously opened after it is once closed.
I will describe a letter-sheet and envelop embodying my invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a combined letter-sheet and envelop. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the letter-sheet partly folded. Fig. 3 is a view of the letter-sheet folded. Figs. 4., 5, 6, and 7 are each a plan view showing a slight modification.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
In all of the forms shown the blank is in a single piece, and it may be of any size and proportions. As here shown, each blank is adapted to have two longitudinal folds and one transverse fold irrespective of the fold given the sealing-flap to close the envelop. Each blank therefore comprises two pages A A, (or there may be more of such pages,) a covering-flap A a sealing-flap A and a safety-flap A The blank may be written on wherever desired, except of course that it would not be advisable to write on the sealing and safety flaps nor upon such portions of the pages A A as would leave the writing exposed after the letter-sheet is folded. The page A is folded upon the page A along its longitudinal edge (indicated by the line a) and the covering-flap A folded over the edge and upon the page A along its longitudinal edge, (indicated by the line a.) The pages A A and flap A are folded transversely, as shown in Fig. 2, and the sealing-flap A then folded over to seal the sheet, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thereby forming the envelop. The sealing-flap A is provided with a gum coating a which is moistened. The safety-flap A, it will be observed, is provided on a transverse edge of the covering-flap A ,adjacent the sealing-flap A and extends entirely along the transverse edge of the covering-flap; It is separated from the sealing-flap by a notched cut a making it independent of the sealingfiap. It is also provided with a gum coating a which is moistened and pressed against the sealing-flap A when the covering-flap is folded over the page A. (See Fig. 2.) A safety-flap A of this size is more effectual than were it only a tab.
It will he understood that the lines a and a are not upon the blank, they being used merely to indicate the line of fold. As here shown, the line of folding of the sealing-flap A and the safety-flap A is perforated, which is done to permit of their being folded easily. The perforations are not necessary.
Referring now to Fig. 4, the line of folding of the covering-flap A is perforated, as is the line of folding of the sealing-flap; but the line of folding of the safety-flap is not perforated. The safety-flap is also shown as being continuous with the sealing-flap in its formation; but it is separated from the sealing-flap bya cut a In Fig. 5 the blank is the same as shown in Fig. l, with the exception that the line of folding of the covering-flap A is perforated and the line of folding of the safety-flap is not.
In Fig. 6 the safety-flap A is in the form of a triangle, and the gum coating a extends down onto the covering-flap in order that the covering-flap may also be sealed to the page A.
In Fig. 7 the blank is the same as that shown in Fig. 4, with the exception that a slightly-different form of safety-flap is used.
It will be seen that by reason of the relative arrangements of the sealing and safety flaps there is little waste in the cutting of the blank and that the necessary gummin g is done by a single operation. It will also be noted that the envelop after it has been scaled may be opened by a single out, which is made through the sealing and safety flaps.
'What I claim as my inventionis- 1. A combined letter and envelop comprisiug a plurality of pages, a sealing-flap provided with a gummed coating arranged along an edge of one of the pages, a covering-flap also arranged along an edge of one of the pages, and a safety-flap having a gummedcoating arranged at and extending along an edge of the covering-flap and adjacent to the sealing-flap.
2. A combined letter and envelop comprising a plurality of pages, a sealing-flap provided with a gumrned coating arranged along an edge of one of the pages, a covering-flap also arranged along an edge of one of the pages, and a safety-flap having a gummed coating and arranged relatively to the pages so as to fold over a page and under the sealing-fiap.
3. A combined letter and envelop comprising a plurality of pages, a covering-flap attached to one page and adapted to be folded over and protect a loose edge of one or more pages, a sealing-flap attached to one page and adapted to be folded over and protect a loose edge of one or more pages, means for rigidly retaining both said sealing-flap and said covering-fiap in their said folded and protecting positionsthe said letter and envelop being adapted to be opened by a single out along one edge of the same as folded.
4. A combined letter and envelop comprising a plurality of pages, a sealing-flap attached to one page and adapted to be folded over and protect a loose edge of one or more pages, a covering-flap attached to a page and adapted to be folded over and protect a loose edge of one or more pages, and a safety-flap attached to said covering-flap and adapted to be rigidly secured and to hold said coveringfiap in its folded-over and protecting positionthe said letter and envelop being adapted to be opened by a single out along one edge of the same as folded.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY V. WVAGONER.
