SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 703,816, dated July 1, 1902. Application filed January 14, 1902i. Seria No. 89,777. (No model.)

Be it known that LJOHN L. PAXSON, of Mo bile, in' the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Adjustable Socket-Trenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in socket-wrenches which may be adjusted to fit different sizes of nuts, bolts, &c.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient wrench which can bereadilyapplied to manipulate different sizes of nuts, bolts, &c., and onewhich has no complicated parts to get out of order. Y
To these ends myinvention consists of the particular construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed outin the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a verticalcentral longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is adetailed perspective view of the small end of one member partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of the larger end of onemember. Fig. 5 is a cross-section on line 5 5 of Fig.2. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a modification. The wrench consists of the two members A A, which are substantially similar in shape, the body portions of each consisting of a piece of steel or other suitable material, preferably semicircular in cross-section, having one end swelled or enlarged, as at A, and providedon their inner faces at said ends with the half notch or socket A which is composed of angled walls. Extending rearwardly-from the rear wall or shoulder A of the socket A are the reduced half notches or sockets A, tapering rearwardly from the shoulderA to a hole H, bored transversely through the enlarged portion A, beyond which it continues a slight distance. At the opposite ends-of each member A A are provided similar halfsockets a a and a (L The abutting faces of the two members of the wrench are fiat at their centers B and are beveled or slant upwardlyto each end, thereby forming a rocking fulcrum at the said centers. One member is provided, at said center with a tapering pin B, which is secured in said member and projects into and through ahole B in the opposite member, said hole being larger than the portion of thepin B projecting therethrough, or the hole or opening B may be elliptical or oval in shape, thus permitting the two members A A rocking on each other at theirlongitudinal center. The
two members are placed together, with their flatfaces abutting at the center and their ends standing apart or separated,a nd a coarse screwthread T is preferably cut on their outer surface from 00 to 00.
.A sleeve or nutO, which is preferably provided with an internal thread O,,correspond and projectsthrough a hole or openingin the opposite member; but said pin may be made integral with onemember and project therefrom into the hole or opening in the opposite member. 7 (See B Fig. (3.) Said pin may also be of uniform diameter throughout its length. (See 13, Fig. 7.)
.Itwill be seen that by sliding or screwing the sleeveor nut in either direction on the ends of the coacting arms or members A A said members are'caused to rock on their centers and thehalf-sockets in the opposite faces approach each other and grip the nut, bolt, or other object between them. The amount of opening between the ends of the members can be adjusted within the range of the movement allowed by the amount of beveling of the abutting faces and the rocking at the center 0.
When the wrench is in its normal condition, the sleeve or nut Owillbeoverthe cencombined is the same between the points w ends A and a at the small ends permit of the wrench being used on nuts, &c. the outer faces of which are tapered.
Myimproved wrench is particularly adapted for use on nuts of buggy-wheels, as it will hold a greasy nut secure while greasing the axle.
The pin B projecting into the opening 13 prevents lateral movement of the members upon each other, thereby insuring a perfect grip of the half-socket sections on the nut or other object.
The hole H forms a convenient means to receive a pin or rod to give greater leverage to start a nut that cannot be moved with the ordinary grip of the hand.
More than one pin may be used, as shown in Fig. 8 at B B to preserve the more perfect alinment of the members A A.
The diameter of the two opposite members when the abutting faces of the said members are brought closely together, and the said diameter is equal to the internal diameter of the nut or sleeve C, so that when the said nutis moved to the extreme end of its longitudinal movement the abutting faces of each member are in close contact and the wrench-handle becomes practically a circular body.
While the ends of each member are shown as semicircular in cross-section, yet it may be desirable on account of ease of manufacture by stamping from steel to make them square or angular in section at such points, as shown in Fig. 9.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A socketwrench comprising opposite members having abutting centers, said abutments being flattened, half-sockets in the in.- ner faces of each member at the ends thereof, and a sleeve surrounding said members, operatively engaging the same on both sides of the abutting centers, and capable of longitudinal movement thereon, whereby the ends of the members may be forced together to grip a nut or other object. 2. A socket-wrench comprising opposite members abutting at their centers, the inner faces of each member having bevels extending to each end, half-sockets at the ends of each member,tapering half-sockets in the rear of said end sockets, and a sleeve surrounding the said members capable of longitudinal movement toward each end, to cause said ends to approach each other and grip a nut or'other object.
3. A socket-wrench comprising opposite members having a rocking engagement at their abutting centers, screw-threads on the exterior surface of each member, half-sockets in the inner face of each member at each end, a threaded sleeve or nut adapted to screw on the exteriorly-threaded members, and cause the ends of the opposite members to approach each other.

A socketwrench comprising opposite members, projecting abutting centers, one or more pins projecting from the projecting center of one member, the opposite member bein g provided with one or more openings adapted to receive the said projecting pin or pins, halfsockets in the ends of each member, screw-threads on the exterior surface of each member extending on each side of the center thereof, and a nut surrounding the members and adapted to coact'with the exterior threads on each member whereby longitudinal movement of said nut is permitted in either direction to cause the opposing socketed endsof the members to approach each other.
5. A socket wrench comprising opposite members having flat abutting centers, bevels extending from said fiat abutting centers toward the ends of each member, a swell or enlargement at one end of each member, halfsockets in said swells or enlargements, screwthreads on the exterior surface of each 'member extending from the said swells or enlargements, beyond the longitudinal center of the members, a pin projecting from the abutting center of one member, the opposite member being provided with an opening at its abutting center adapted to receive the said projecting pin, and athreaded sleeve or nut surrounding and engaging the threaded portion of the opposite members, whereby longitudinal movement of the said sleeve or nut toward each end is permitted to cause the opposing socketed ends of each member to approach each other.
6. A socket-wrench comprising opposite externally centrally threaded members provided with half-sockets in their inner faces at each end, and having a rocking engagement at their center, coinciding holes through each member near its end adapted to receive a pin whereby the turning leverage may be increased, and an internally-threaded sleeve surrounding said members, said sleeve being adapted to move longitudinally on said members and cause the ends to approach each other.
