HARRY MCCARTY, OF WILLIAMSPORT, PENNSYLVANIA.
JOURNAL- Box LID.
SPECIFICATION' formingpart of Letters'Pate'nt No. 703,736, dated July 1, 1902. Application iiled August 30,1901. Serial'No. 73.771. (No model.)
T0 all whom. iv' may concern: p
Be it known that I, HARRY C. MCCARTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Williamsport, in the county of Lycoming, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new andusefulImprovements in Journal-Box Lids, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises certain improvements in car-axle boxes whereby the Wear and rattling between the lid and thebox are largely prevented and the dust is prevented from entering the box through the'opening over whie the lid extends.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal centralsection through a caraxle box, illustrating the improvements. Fig. 2 is a partial section on the line A A of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front View of the'box and lid; and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing a bolt for attaching the lidAto the box, differing in form from that shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings, 1 indicates a car journal-box, which may be of any desired form, and 2 indicates the carjournal. Upon thev outer face 3 of the box and extending along each side of the openin g is arranged a rib 4. The box is formed with an upwardprojection 5, the outer face of which is flush with the face of thebox, and secured within an opening 6 in saidprojection is a bolt B. This bolt has a shank 7 extending through the opening, a shoulder 8, f1tting against the outer face of the projection, and a head 9. The bolt may be secured by any suitablev means, such as the nut 10 and' locking-pin 11. In the face of the projection 5 and surrounding the bolt is an annular con centric recess 12,`Whicl1 is adapted to receive an annular rib 13 upon the inner face of the lid 14. Surrounding the Vbolt B is a sleeve 15, Vhaving a-flange 16vat its outer end, and said sleeve and bolt extend through an opening 17 formed in the lid concentric with the rib 13. VThe sleeve Ais held inposition by the head 9 of the bolt, and between the flanged head 16 of the sleeve and the lid is arranged a helical spring 18,'surrounding the sleeve and tending to hold the lid against the face of the box. Upon the outer face of the lid surrounding the spring is an annular projection 19 for retaining and centering the spring around the sleeve. The lower end of the lid is preferably provided with ra handle vportion 20.
When the box is closed, the sides of the lid fit closely between the ribs 4, as shown in Fig. 3, and the lid is held firmly against the face of the box by the pressure of the spring 18. When it is desired to open the box, the lid is pulled outward against the action of the spring for a sufficient distance to clear the ribs 4, and it-may then be swung laterally to open the box. These ribs, which fit along the edges of the lid, prevent dust and sand which are swept up by the train and beat against the forward side of the box from enterjing. VThe annular rib`13, fitting within the recess 12, supports the `lid andprevents it from vibrating, thus taking thel wear olf of the bolt and the walls of the opening in the lid through which the bolt extends. In car journal-boxes wherein'` the Vlid is supported directly upon the bolt it is found that the bolt and the opening in the lid both wear, owing to the pounding of .the wheels upon the track, and that this weardecreases the efficiency of the lid as a means for excluding dust from the box and also results in rattling noises between the parts.
In Fig. 4 the llanged sleeve is dispensed with and the bolt B'is formed with an enlarged head 2l, which extends over the end of the helical spring `18. The outer portion v22 of the bolt, as shown, has a greater diameter than the innerportion, and the .spring extends between the head 2l and the lid, surrounding the part22 and the annular projection 19, said parts serving to center the spring at both ends.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination with a car journal-box having an opening in its forwardend',`ribs at the sides of said opening, anda projecting bolt above said opening, there being an annular recess or socket surrounding saidfbolt, of a lid pivotally mounted upon the bolt and adapted to fit between said ribs, said lid having a projection fitting into said recess, and a spring surrounding the bolt and bearing against the lid.
2. The combination with a car journal-box having an opening in its forward end, ribs at IIO the sides of said opening, and a projecting bolt above said opening, there being an annular recess or socket surrounding said bolt, of a lid pivotally mounted upon the bolt and adapted to fit between said ribs, said lid having an annular projection fitting into said recess, and a spring surrounding the bolt and bearing against the lid.
3. The combination with a car journal-box having an opening in its forward end, ribs at the sides of said opening, and a projecting bolt above said opening, there being an annular recess or socket surrounding the bolt,
HARRY C. MCCARTY.
