To all whom; 'it may concern.'
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. Hnwrrfr, a citizen of the. United States, and a resident of lluli'alo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Car Journal- Boxes, of which the following is-a full, clear, and lexact description.
The invention relates to journal'boxes for railway cars and seeksy to providean irnproved construction which obviates the necessity of employing? a key or WedgeY for holding the journal bea-ring or parts in position in the box.
The invention consists in the featuresof improvement hereinafter set. forth, illus-v trated in the preferred form in the accom' panying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Y
ln the. d awinga Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a car truck withthe improved journal box applied thereto, the journal box being shown in section on 'the line 1-1 of Fig. 3. Figs. Q4 and 3 are vertical and horiontal sections on the lines 2-2 and 8-3, respectively, of Fig. 1.' Fig. 2,- is a viewsimilar to Fig. 2, illustratingr the manner in which the journal bearing is placed in or removed from position.
The improved box is preferably formed of cast steel or iron and comprises top, bottom and side walls 1, 2, 3 and 4, the top and bottom walls 1 and 2 being integral with the inner and outer side walls 3 and 4.. The general outline of the improved box is similar to that now in use. The bottom wall 2 is curved or semi-cylindrical in form and is i provided at its outer end with an upturned Aso portion 5. A lid 6 of any suitable construction'is pivotally connected to a lng 7 at the forward end of the top wall and closes the .forward end of the box. The box is provided with an enlarged rectangular inner end portion 8 having a seat or guideway 9 for the dust guard 10.
The wheel axlel 11 has a wheel 12 fixed thereto and a projecting journal-13 extending within the box. '1`he'j0urnal is provided in usual manner with a iiange or collar 14 at 'its outer ond and a shoulder 1.5 at its inner Aend. "The journal bearing 16 is of usual form and is provided with an angular upper surfa ce .and a cylindrical lower surface which engages the journal. At its lower side portions,` the bearing is provided with laterally projecting edge flanges 17 and stop lugs 18 and at its inner end 'the bearing' has the usual upstanding fiange 19.
'In the journal box now in use, the bearlng is held in position by a wedge or key which is inserted between the, hearing' and the upper portion of the box. vflhe inner end of the key is arranged to engage with thenpstanding Hange 19 to prevent the outward movement of the bearing, the key it self being held against outward: movement by lnwardly'projecting lugs at the outer end ofthe box. In the present construction, the top wall 1 ofthe ljournalbox is thickened or reinforced and is recessed `on its lower face toform -an angular seat Q0 which directly engages the upper angular surface of the journal. bearing and, at its inner end, the *thickened top wall is provided with an an gular recess 21 for receiving' the upstanding flange 19 at theinner ehd of the bearing'. f
The recess 2l forms a shoulder 22 at the inner end of the bearing seat 2() and which Coopcrates with the bearingr flange 15) to prevent the longitudinal displacement -of the bearing in outward direction.
The journal box is provided with integral guides 23 which project inwardly from the side walls 3 and 4f of the box and depend from the top wall 1. These guides coperatc with the edge flanges 1T and the stop lugs 18 of the bearing' to hold the latter in position and prevent its longitudinal displacement toward the inner end of the box.
The journal box is mounted to rock or oseillate in a direction transverse to the side frame of the car truck on in the vertical plane of the axis of the box and of the axle 11'. .The journal box may be mounted for such rocking movement in any suitablefmanner. The particular construction'shown is similar .tothat-sct forth in an application for improvements in car trucks,filed by me December S, 1911, Serial No. 664,643. As shown in said application, the journal box is provided 'on its inner side with a laterally projecting journal 24 which is mounted in suitable bearings in hubs 25 and 2G formed at the inner portions and at thc outer end,`respectively, of the car truck side frame 27. As set forth in said prior application, the side frame is jonrnaled upon the cylindrical end portion 28 of the transverse .connectingY member or transom of the car truck so that thel side frame is free to rock in a vertical plane. The bearing portion at the outer end' of the journal y the inner end is somewhat reduced.

The journal box is removably held in position upon the-side frame, as set `forth in the application above referred to, by a key 30 vextending through its outer bearing portion and engaging the inner face of the ub 26 on' the side frame. To strengthen the box and its connection with the journal 24, the inner side of the box is preferably vsomewhat thickened and is provided with an extra heavy portion 31 from whichA the journal M projects. The enlarged'portion 8 .at the' innerl end of the box serves as a strengthaenir1gl rib, but preferably the box isalso provided with'A integral, external strengtheningribs 32 which extend across thetop Wall-off the box and down partway upon the; outer side Walle, as shown 1n Figs l and 2.
Inasmuch as thebox is mounted to rock in 'aplane extending through theaxis of the journal and transverse to the 'side frame, itean not only be lifted away from the journal 13 inthe ordinary manner, but can also be'rocked or oscillated, as indicated in Fig. 4, so that there is ample room to insert or remove the journal bearing 16 over the collar or flange 14 at the outer end of the journal and to -eife'ct the engagement or disengagement of the upstanding end ilange 19 of the journal With the shoulder 22 at I the innerend of the bearing seat 20.
Itis obvious that changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the essentials ofthe invention as de- I claim as my. invention:-
1. A railway car journal-box having in-v tegral 'topa-bottom and side Walls, one atleast of said side Walls having a laterally projecting integral journal ihr pivotally connecting the-.journal box to the truck side frames, said side Walls having invvardly l projecting guides engaging the edge flanges and stop lugs of the journal bearing and said top wall `being thickened or reinforced and lhaving-'an angular seat-on its lower face arranged to directly engage the upper angular surface of the journal bearing, and..`

The conibination'ivith a car truck side frame, of a journal box pivoted upon said side frame to rock transversely'thereof, saidl journal box having integral top, bottom and side Walls, and inwardly projecting,'bear ing guides integral- With said side walls, said top wall being thickenedA and having an angular bearing seat Yon its lower face and a recess at' the inner endof the seat for receiving the upstanding end flange of the bearing substantially as described.
