Description

(NQ Model.)
J. R. BAKER. y
. GAR AXLE BOX.
N0. 370,034. Patented Sept. 20, 1887.
UNI-TED STATES JAOKSON R. BAKER, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO THE BAKER ADJUSTABLE BEARING COMPANY, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPBCIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 370.034. dated September 20. 1887.
Application fi1ed Inne 29, 1887.
Be iE known EhaE I, J AOKSON R. BAKER, of Jersey CiEy, in Ehe counEy f Hudson and SEaEe 0t' New Jersey, have invented a cerEain new and useful ImprovemenE in OanAxle Bearings, of whieh I deelare Ehe following Eo be a full, clear, and exacE specifieation, reference being hacl Eo Ehe aecornpanying drawings, forming a parE Ehereof.
This invenEion is in Ehe nature 0f an improve menE in ear-axle bearings; and the invenEion consists 0f a earaxle bearing consErueted and combined subsbantially in Ehe mann.er and f01 Ehe purpose herein parEieularly described.
In Ehe aecoxn panying sheeE 0f drawings,Figure 1 is a verEical secEion in Ehe liney yFig. 2,0f a car-axle b0x, showing Ehe applicaEion of my bearing Ehere1'n. Fig. 2 is a plan 01' t0p view in seeEion taken in Ehe line x w, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a E0p view of the key, and Fig. 4a Eop view of Ehe axle bearing or brass.
Similar leEEers 0f referenee indlcate 1ike parEs in Ehe several views.
This invention relaEes particularly Eo animprovemenb in Ehe applicaEion of Ehe adjustable axlebearings heretofore patented by mein sevoral LeEters PatenE. The disEinguishing fea- Eure of such patented axle-bearings is Ehe adjnsE-ability 0l' the bearing Eo Ehe irregular m0- tions of Ehe axle, caused by inequalilies in Ehe Erack and 0Eherwise. T0 adapts Ehese adjusE- able bearings Eo Ehe purpose f0r which Ehey were designed, however, iE was found necessary t0 construcE Ehe axle box 0r housing 0f specific 0x speeial fonn in some parEiculars, and Ehe chief purpose 0f Ehis presenEinvenEion is Eo penniE Ehe easy applieation of my afore-' said patented bearings Eo Ehe axle boxes 01 housings of any ordinary construcEion.
T0 EhaE end, referring Eo Ehe drawings, wherein E represents an ordinary axlebox, such as is in common use on railways, I uEilize Ehe ordinary sEopsf whieh are casE Eo Ehe inne1 Eop surl'aees 0f such boxes, and also Ehe lugs h, whieh are also casE on said boxes and Eo Ehe inner surfaces of Ehe sides Ehereof. 'lo an axleb0x having Ehese features I fiE what I may eall akey, A. Thiskeyis of easE meEal,and in iE is casE a cireular recess, k, in which recess 1's fiEEed 111y eentral bearing, B. This keyA is Serial N0. 242,846. (N0 model.)
provided wiEh lugs a, whieh Eerminate in hook projeeEions b, and Ehe key has formed 011 iE 1ugs g, also.
G represents Ehe axle-brass WiEh a eenE-ral cireular convex projection, l, whieh proj eeEion enters inEo Ehe concavity 0f Ehe bearing B, Ehe lower surfaee 0f Ehe brass C resEing upon Ehe surface 0f Ehe journal D of Ehe car-axle.
The construetion of Ehe brass C and Ehe bearing B in Ehe parEieulars named in 110 wise differing from Ehe consbrnebion described in my previous patents, it will noE be neeessary E0 repeaE EhaE deseripEion minnEely again, a referenee Eo Ehese patenEs, partieularly EhaE 0f 1881, being sufficient; buE by reason 0f Ehe 6 eonstrucEion 0f Ehe key A t0 my adjusbable bearings, as aforesaid, I am enabled E0 apply Ehese bearings Eo Ehe ordinary axle-box, andto d0 Ehis iE is simply neeessary Eo insert Ehe key A, containing wiEhin iE Ehe bearing B, wiEhin Ehe axle-box E unEil Ehelugs a 0f Ehe key abuE againsl: Ehe ordinary stops,f,of Ehe boxEhe box beingjacked up, as is eusEomary when fiEEing brasses. 'Ihe brass G being inserEedas sEaEed, and as is shown in Fig. l, Ehe key A is plaeed over iE-, iEs eoncave parE receiving Ehe convex parE l of Ehe br-ass O, Ehe lower surface 0f Ehe brass C resEing 0n Ehejournal D, so EhaE when Ehe jaek is removed from beneaEh Ehe box Ehe weighE 0f the car brings Ehe upper surface 0f Ehe key A in elose conEaeE wiEh Ehe under surfaee, e, et Ehe Eop of Ehe box E, Ehe convex parE Z of Ehe brass O snugly wiEhin Ehe coueaviEy 0f Ehe bearing B,and Ehe under bearingsurl'aee of Ehe brass O EighEly againsE Ehe sur face 0f Ehejournal D, and when thisis done Ehe flxing of Ehe keybearing.andbrass Eo EhejournalwiEhintheboxiseompleEed. Now,whenEhe several parts are adj usted, as described, wiEhin Ehe box, any horizonEal ouEwa-rd movemenE of 0 Ehe key A wiEhin Ehe box is checked by Ehe eontacE 0f Ehe ends of Ehe lugs a of Ehe key wiEh Ehe sEops f, casE wiEhin Ehe box, and anyhorizontal inward movernenE of Ehe key A is cheeked by Ehe conEaeE 0f Ehe lugs 0f Ehe key 5 WiEh Ehe lugs h, casE Eo Ehe sides of Ehe box, and any horizontal sidewise rnoEion of Ehe key A within Ehe box is checked by Ehe contacl; of Ehe sides of the key wiEh Ehe aforesaid lugs h,
the key being held againsE vertieal play by the Weighb of 1he car, which, by reason of the interposed brass O and beaxing B, jams it; between the Journal D and the undertopsurface of bhe box.
From the foregoing it is p1ain thab my ad j usba 1ble bearings are as readily applied to the ordinary axle-boxes as are the common and well-known axle-brasses, and it is also plziin that when so applied. they are quite as effecbive as they wouid be if applied '00 boxes. specia11y constructed for them, for the brass O has thesame horizontal playbeing limited only by the curbs 0r Shops c a11d d, the Shop d entering in the spa'ce between the lugs a of the key A, provided for that p1irpose, and the head m 0f the journal Dand being limibed in the other direction by t-he stop c, and the key A, and the ax1e u, and be pivotal action of the couvex parb Z within the concavity of the bearing B is in 110 wise interfered with.
Another advantage growing out 0f the apthe ordinary and common brass can be inserted within the box in precisely the same manner vand. with the same facility as such brasses are now inserted.
The purpose of be projeetions b of the lugs a of bhe key is 130 facilitzate the reversal of the key A, sh.ou1d il: become necessary, as stated, since they add to the end surface 0f the lugs a and insure the bearing of these ends against the stopsf in 1;he axle-box, and they also present obstacles against which a packing-hook may engage when 113 is used 130 wibhdraw the key from the box. 4
Having now deseribed my invention, what JAOKSON B; BAKER. In presence of- G. M. PLYMPTON, D. A. CARPENTER.
