Description

UNiTED" 4STMES 1 PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL LADEl/VIG, OF ESSEN, GERMANY.
SPECIFICATION forming' part Of Letters Patent NO. 703,730, dated July 1, 1902.
Application filed October 6, 1900. Serial No. 32,263. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom, it may concern:
Beit known that I, PAUL LADEwIG, Ph. a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Essen-on-the-Ruhr, in the Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of'
which thel following is a specification. j j
This invention relates to improved temporary binders of that class which is intended to temporarily bind newspapers, periodicals, doc., in a quick and convenient manner until the'volume is completed, so that the lnumbers can iinally be bound. f i
The invention consists of a temporary binder comprising posts secured tothe backI of the binder, locking devices passing through the front ofthe binder into the postsand interlocking therewith, and perforated or looped connecting -pieces placed on the posts and provided with hinged wire staples, that are attached through the papers or periodicals to be iiled.
The invention consists, further, of the perforated or looped connecting piece with a U-shaped -wire staple hingeditojone edge of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter. l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved temporary binder, showing a periodical applied to the same. Fig. 2 is also a perspective View showingthebinder in the actof having a periodical inserted into the same. Figs. 3 and llare enlarged transverse sections showing the connecting posts on the back and front of the binder, being, respectively, a sideV elevation of the fastening and aicentral section thereof.
back cover, and B-thefront cover, of my iin-A provedv temporary binder, and C is a backv for the same, which is connected by flexible hinges with the front and back covers V`and'i's formed of three strips or pieces C C2 O3, that Fig. 5 is a detail; plan view of y'the connecting-piece with its hinged wire are also connected by flexible hinges, so as to be placed either ilat, as shown in Fig. 2, or formed into a U-shaped back, as shown in Fig. l.
The strip C3 of the back C, adjacent to the rear coverA, is provid ed with screw-threaded hollow posts D D', which are connected therewith b v screws d, the heads of the connecting-screws d being nicked, so as to screw the same into` the strip C3 of the back. The posts D D/ are made tubular, two or more being provided, according io the size of the temporary binder, and at the upper end post D, as
shown, or both, is provided with an L-shaped recess d", Which receives a pin c, projecting from a removable headed pin E, that is inserted within an opening e in the front strip C2 of the back C, said opening being rein- -l`orced by a perforated .sheet-metal eyelet eX,
provided with a recess e2 for permitting the insertion of the small projecting pin e of the main pin E, so that the same can be readily passed through the opening e' into the post D and guided along the recess d until it arrives at the lower transverse portion of the same. A bayonet-joint connection is thus formed. The main pin E is then turned, by means of a suitable key inserted in recesses or holes in its head, sothat the projecting pin e interlocks with the transverse portion of the recess d', and thereby looks the front cover to the back cover, as shown in Figs. 2S and 4. j`
A helical spring f is introduced between `thevfastening-screw ol of the post Dwand the inner end of theniain pin'E,"as shown in Fig. 4, so that a certain tension is' 'exerted on the locking-pin` E, and thereby the accidental loosening, turning, or detachin'g of the pin from the post prevented... i
For connecting the periodicals, newspapers, dto., to be` temporarily bound with the binder a connecting-piece is used, which consists of a perforated metal plate g, provided Witha hinged wire 'staple'g' at, one. edge, as shown in Fig. 5.
In place of the perforated metallic cpnlnecting-plate g a perforated strip g2 of stout paper, preferably one doubled up, asin Fig. 6, or a wire loop g4, as shown in Fig. Y7, may be used, said connecting-strip being preferably as long as the periodical to IOO l be bound and the wire staple in all forms of the connection being passed through the folding edge of the periodical into the inside of the same, where the ends of the staple are clenched, so that they retain the newspaper, periodical, thc., in the binder.
My improved temporary binder is used as follows: The paper to be filed is lirst connected with the connecting-piecegor strip g2 or loop g4 by passing the ends of the staples through the folding edge of the same, after which the ends are clenched over. The binder is then opened by turning the interlocking-pin E by means ofthe key. When several connecting-posts are used, one pin E after the other is released by means of the key, the spring in the interior of the post pushingr the main pin upward as soon as the small interlocking-pin e is in the longitudinal portion of the recess in the post, so that the lockingpins can be conveniently detached and the front cover moved away from the back cover, as shown in Fig. 2. The perforated metallic pieces g or strips g2 or loops g4 are then placed over the posts D Dand the front cover placed back over the back cover, so that small pins e on the main pins Ecan beinterlocked,by means ofthe key, with the recesses d' of the posts D, as shown in Fig. l. On turning the interlocking pins E with the key the interlocking of the small projecting pin e with the transverse portion of the recess d is accomplished, as before described. The newspaper or periodical is then in the proper position in the binder, after which the binder is placed on the table or any other place for use.
In the drawings a temporary binder is shown in which only one locking-pin E is used, the second post D' not being provided with a locking-pin, but with a rounded-off end, which engages into a depression or socket s, set into the front strip C2 of the back C, as shown in Fig. 2. This requires the unlocking of only one locking-pin when opening or closing the binder. This arrangement is well adapted for small temporary binders. For larger binders, however, it is preferable to have two or more pins, asr thereby better stability is given to the binder and more reliable connection between the front and back covers is obtained.
The perforated connecting plates or strips or loops with wire staples hinged to their edges are made and supplied in quantities, so as to be always ready for use by the parties using the binders. The staples g are applied to the metallic plates g by a hinge-sleeve g3, placed around the middle portion of the staple, and to the loops g4 by means of eyes g5, while when connecting paper strips are used the ends of the wire staples arc pierced through the folded edge ofthe strip, as shown in Fig. 6.
The advantage of my improved temporary binder is the convenience in use, so that newspapers, periodicals, sheet-music, or other articles to be bound can be readily collected in the same until a suiicient number is collected, when they are removed from the temporary binder by opening the connectingposts and locking-pins, removing the connecting-pieces from the posts, and then removing the Wire staples from the folded back of the periodicals by opening the staples, when the papers are ready for binding.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is
l. A temporary binder, consisting of two covers, a back with hinged connection therewith, and having-openings, posts attached to a portion of the back, o e of said posts being hollow and provided wit an L-shaped recess at its open end, a headed locking-post passing through one of said openings in another portion of the back, and provided with a lateral pin for interlocking with the L-shaped recess of the hollow post, and an eyelet provided in said opening and having a recess therein for the passage of said lateral pin, substantially as set forth.
2. A temporary binder, consisting of two covers, a back hinged to the covers, and composed of a middle and two side strips hinged together, a tubular post projecting from one ofsaid side strips, and having an interiorlythreaded lower end, a headed screw for attaching said post to said strip, an L-shaped recess in the opposite end of the post, locking-post passing through the other side strip of the back and provided with a projecting pin interlocking with the L-shaped recess of the tubular post, and a tension-spring interposed between the fastening-screw of the tubular post and the inner end of the locking-post, substantially as set forth.
Atemporary binder, composed ofcovers, a three-part back to which they are hinged, openings in one of said parts, posts, one of which connects the front and rear strips of said back, the other of said parts guided in one of said openings, and connecting-pieces adapted to be placed on said posts and provided with hinged wire staples for connection of newspapers, periodicals, the., substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
PAUL LADEWIG.
