T0 ctZZ whom, t mary-concern: Be it known that I, CHARLES B. FAIRCHILD, a citizen of the United States, and a' resident' of New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a Tag or Check, of which the following is a specication.

This invention relates to tags, and relates particularly to tags adapted for use by rail# road-conductors for identification purposes, in stores for marking goods, and for other similar purposes.

Primary objects of the invention are to provide a tag which may be quickly and conveniently attached to a fabric, as the covering of a car-seat, dry goods, clothing, dac., to provide a tag ,adapted to be printed or written on and from which pencil-writing may be erased, and to provide a tag which is durable and may be used a great many times.

To this end a tag of my invention consists of the various features, combinations of features, and details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. r

In the accompanying drawings a tag of my invention is fully illustrated.

Figure 1 is a front or face View of a tag of my invention, showing in diagram a strengthening-wire. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4. shows the combined attaching-needle and strengthening-wire removed from the tag. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of a tag or check embodying my invention in a slightly-modified form; and Fig. 6 is a view of the edge of the tag, showing said tag bent sofas to expose the point of the attaching-needle.

Broadly stated, a tag of my invention consists of a ticket or card A of desired shape and sizeA which is flexible and preferably resilient and which may be printed or written upon and from which, preferably, pencilmarks may be erased. Said card or ticket A is provided with a slot a, and extending longitudinally of said slot ay is a needle 0,', which is secured in or to said card or ticket A at oneend and the other end of which is free. Thus when the card or ticket A is straight the needle-point will be disposed inside of the lateral surfacesl of said card or ticket;v

but when said card or ticket is bent, as shown in Fig. 6, said needle ct will be outside of said tag, the point thereof being exposed to admit of sticking it into any fabric to which it is desired to attach said tag.

In its preferable form a tag of my invention consists of twopieces a2 of heavy paper, as Manila paper or the like, securely pasted or gummed together.

The slot ct preferably extends longitudinally of the tag and is preferably formed adjacent to one end thereof,which may be called the top, leaving the opposite end or bottom of said tag continuous, so that it may con- 'veniently be Written upon.

The needle o. is securedto the tag A` at the upper en d of the slot ct and is practically of the samelength as said slot. In thepreferable construction shown also said needle et is formed integral with a spring-wire secured between the layers a2' of the tag A, said wire comprising a section as, which extends practically the entire length of said tag, preferably adjacent to one edge thereof, a section a4, which extends across the top f the tag, and a bent section 0,5, which connects the section a4 with the' upper end of the needle a. The section a3 of said wire imparts strength and resiliency to the tag, and as a whole said wire strengthens said tag, keeps it straight, and affords convenient means for securely attaching the needle a thereto. In the preferable construction shown also the tag is thicker at the lower end of the slot ct-that is,opposite the end of the needle OX-than elsewhere,thus affording better protection for the point of said needle and preventing the same from being exposed by slight bending of the tag A in handling or from other cause. As shown, the thickness of said tag is thus increased by inserting a piece of pasteboard or other suitable material of desired' size and thickness-say one-quarter of an inch square by one-eighth of an inch in thickness-betweenthe layers a2 of said tag. In the preferable construction shown also piecesa, of cheese-cloth, muslin, or the like, are secured between the layers a2 of said tag, one on each side of the wire therein. Said pieces a? will decrease the liability of the tag to be torn and `Will prevent the wire from wearing through said tag.

As a modification of my improved tag or check I contemplate making one side or surface thereof continuous, the slot a extending only part way through the same, as shown in Fig. 5. Vvith this construction it is obvious that the tag may be attached in the same manner as-where the slot a extends entirely through the tag or check.

My invention therefore contemplates a slot which extends partly or entirely through the tag.

I claiml. A tag or check comprising separate layers of suitable material secured together, a slot in said tag, a wire inserted between the layers of said tag, said Wire comprising a section which extends longitudinally of said tag and a needle formed continuous with each other, said needle extending longitudinally of the slot formed in said tag, the point of said needle being normally disposed inside of the lateral surfaces of said tag or check, substantially as described.

A tag or check comprising separate layers of suitable material secured together, a slot in said tag, a Wire inserted between the layers of said tag, said Wire comprising a section which extends longitudinally of said tag, a section which extends transversely of said tag and a needle all continuous with each other, said needle extending longitudinally of the slot formed in said tag, the point of said needle being disposed inside of the lateral surfaces of said tag or check, substantially as described.

3. A tag or check comprising separate layers of suitable material secured together, a slot in said tag, a wire inserted between the layers of said tag, said wire comprising a section which extends longitudinally practically the entire length of said tag or check, a section which extends transversely of said tag and a needle all continuous with each other, said needle extending longitudinally of the slot formed in said tag, the point of said needle being disposed normally inside of the lateral surfaces of said tag or check, substantially as described.

4. A tag or check comprising separate layers of suitable material secured together, a slot in said tag, a Wire inserted between the layers of said tag, said wire comprising a section which extends longitudinally of said tag or check and a needle formed continuous with each other, said needle extending longitudinally of the slot in said tag and being disposed inside ot the lateral surfaces of said tag or check,and said tagorcheck being relatively thick adjacent to the point of said needle, substantially as described.

5. A tag or check comprising separate layers secured together,aslot insaid tag,a wire inserted between the layers forming said tag, said wire comprising a section which extends longitudinally of said tag and a needle formed continuous with each other, said needle extending longitudinally of the slot formed in said tag or check and pieces of relatively strong, tough fabric, as muslin or cheesecloth, secured between the layers of the tag or check on opposite sides of the wire, substantially as described.
