GEORGE CHASE, or SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
T +1 EAT-G ENE RATO R.
srEcIFIo trIoN forming part of.-Letters Application filed March 22, 1902.
T0 aZZ whom, it nay concern:
Be itknown thatI, GEORGE S. CHASE, a'citizen of theUnite'dStates of America, and a resident of Springfield,in the county of I-Iampden and State ofMassachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heat-Generatorsiof which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention has for its object to provide an apparatus by means of which the heat from an ordinary oil-lamp may be economically utilized and conserved for raising the temthe avoidance of smoking or objectionable odor.
The improvements relate to the construction of the heater, to means forits support at any such proper height as to accommodate it tobe used in conjunction with a lamp, whether a low or tall lamp, to means whereby the heater mayhave a swinging movementin gaged from the upper end portion of the chimney of the lamp to permit the removal of the lamp and its chimney away from and without obstruction by the heater, and to means whereby the heater at its lower end opening is adapted to be used in conjunction with the upper end portion of lamp-chimneys of large or small diameters.
The invention consists in the construction of the heater, in combination therewith of supporting and adjusting appliances, allsubstantially as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims. i Z
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation and central ver tical sectional View of the apparatus with an ordinary lamp indicated as having itslocation for utilization in conjunction with the heater. Fig.2 is a plan view of the heater apparatus. Fig. 3 is a plan-view of-an internal part of the heater inverted. Fig. 4: is an inverted plan viewof an appliance for contracting a circular lower end opening of. the heater, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing the latter as in its connection at the bottom of the heater.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
In the drawings, A represents the heater,
Patent No. 703,540, dated July 1, 1902. seam. 99,416. on model.)
consisting of upper and lower separated circular chambers a. and b, the Walls of which may be advantageously composed of'sheet metal. The lower chamber has the central dependingannularwalld, surroundingthelower circular opening f, leading intothe lower heater-chamber b, and the upper chamber a, has the central upwardly-leading chimney g.
The upper and lower chambers are connected ceiving the sleeve-like part g, having the lat eral extension 0". The nut-s,-screw engaging the post 0, constitutesan adjustable support for the sleeve-like part q.
Grepresents a part of the'apparatus, which comprises the two parallel arms t t and the uniting member 25?, which hasthe median projection t, which is so hinge-connected at t with the member ref the sleeve q as to be capable of having the rigidly-supported horizontal disposition, as shown in Fig. 1, and to be swung in an upward direction therefrom, so as to carry the depending annular portion (1 of the heater upwardly out of engagement with the upper end portion of the chimneyw of the lamp to permit the lamp to be taken away, and this arrangement of course facilitates the quick and easy bringing of the lamp into the position shown of connection with the heater.
The engagement which the heater has with the supporting horizontal parallel members If t is by means of the sheet-metal" loops or straps u it, provided upon the top wall of the upper chamber a of the heater, or by the similar straps a 21?, provided at and depending below the lower wall of the lower chamber 1).
In the illustration shown the lamp may be considered as a comparatively low lamp, and therefore the heater has its support by the upper straps It 20, depending below the arms 1525 of the swinging heater-support G; but in case a considerably-higher lamp were to be employed or one having a higher chimney the heater A could readily be slid off from the strap connections, with the arms t t and the heater carried above the heater-support, the engagement being now made by sliding the lower straps a 11 about and along the arms i t.
Now in order that the best conditions for heating may be acquired the heater may be further slightly vertically adjusted either to place it higher or lower, which may be done by changing the position of the nut s in its screw engagement on the post, the sleeve 1 being correspondingly raised or lowered.
The aforementioned heat-concentrating appliance B may comprise internal baffle walls or partitions, which may be concentric with each other, as indicated at o 1 leaving downwardly-openingannularspaces,orsuch plates may be parallel or otherwise disposed with relation to each other, the object thereof being to arrest and retain the heat from the lamp within the lower chamber a sufficiently long to acquire the satisfactory proportion of its radiating effect thereat before the similar radiating effect by such heat from the lamp is acquired in and about the upper heaterchamber.
The apparatus is equipped with an appliance whereby the lower opening f,leading upwardly thereinto, which is comparativelylarge for the reception therein of a correspondingly large upper-ended lamp-chimney, may be contracted to adapt the heater for the combination therewith of a lamp having a chimney with a considerably-smaller upper end portion, and it will be perceived that a sleevelike part to is provided, having at its lower end a horizontally-turned internal flange w, and said sleeve has the radial studs 10 for engagement by bayonet-joint connection with the angular slots 1 to the opposite sides of the depending wall (I.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A heater of the character described, consisting of upper and lower separated cham' bers having vertical connecting-fines, the upper chamber having an upwardly-leading opening, and the lower chamber having a downwardly-leading opening, and a support comprising an upright and a laterally-extending part on which the heater is sustained.
2. A heating apparatus of the character described, consisting of a heating-chamber, having upper and lower openings and having its top and bottom walls provided with the straps to a and ti 11, combined with the support consisting of an upright member and a part G horizontally sustained thereby, comprising the two separated parallel horizontal members i t, to engagement with which either the upper or the lower pairs of said straps may be brought, for the purpose set forth.
3. In a heating apparatus of the character described, the combination with a base, an upright, and a part vertically adjustable on the upright, of a part G comprising separated members t t, hinge-connected to the part q, and a heater supported by the members t t, and having a heating-chamber provided with the bottom opening leading thereinto, and one or more openings leading upwardly therefrom.
4. In a heating apparatus of the character described, a heater comprising upper and lower separated heating-chambers a and I), the former having an upwardly-leading opening at its top, and the latter having a central opening at its bottom, and said chambers being connected by the vertical flues 7b h, and the lower chamber having therewithin and supported slightly below, its top wall, with a space intervening, a depending cup-shaped part having therewithin a plurality of partitions to separate downwardly-opening spaces, and means for supporting the so-constructed heater in an elevated position.
5. In a heating apparatus of the character described, the heater comprising the upper and lower separated chambers a and Z), and the connecting vertical fines, the upper chamber having a top opening g, and the lower chamber having the depending annular wall with the opposite angular slots the contracting appliance consisting of an annular part having the radial studs 10 and having the internal flange portion w and means for supporting the heater in an elevated position.
U. In a heating apparatus of the character described, in combination, the base D, the uprights C which are screw-threaded, the nut s thereon, the sleeve part q, having the lateral projection 'r, the part G comprising the portion 6 hinge-connected to the part 1', and the pair of separated parallel arms 25 t, the upper and lower heating-chambers a and b, the connecting-fines h and said chambers having the openings and d, and provided with the loopstraps u u, and a a and the lower heaterchamber having therewithin the invertedcup-shaped heat-arresting device, substantially as described.
Signed by me at Springfield, Massachusetts, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
