Be itknown that I, ANDRES F.WAHLBERG.a citizen of the United States, residing atBrooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locks, and more particularly to door-locks; and it has for its object to provide an improved lock of this class embodying a single bolt and in which the bolt may be operated when desired by the customary door-knob or may bev operatively disconnected from the door-knob by a key when in locked position, and be thus prevented from actuation by the door-knob.
By means of my improvements but a single bolt is made necessary for the ordinary temporary locking purposes, in which it is controlled by the door-knob, and also for permanent locking purposes,when only a key of the proper form will serve to permit its actuation to unlock thedoor. V
In the employment of my improved lock with its two functions, as above described, it is only necessary to provide the door with a single lock-receiving chamber, and the eXtra parts or elements required by my improvements'may all be embodied in the same barrel or casing in which the operative connec-V tions between the bolt and the door-knob are housed.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates my improved lock, which is provided with a longitudinally-separable barrel or casing 2, consisting oftwo halves or members 3 and 4, respectively, one of which is fixed at one end to the face-plate 5, which is secured to the edge of the door, and said halves or members '3 and'4when assembled complete a cylindrical formation. Said halves or members 3 and 4 may be connected at one end with an. end plate 6, which is secured to the half or mem ber 4 and through which amachinescrew V7 may be driven into threaded connection with a fixed nut 8, secured within the The half or member 4 of the barrel 2 may be connectedwithl the faceplate 5 by means of a-fixed pin or connection 9, secured to the end portion ofthe same opposite that which carries the end plate 6 and arranged to enter a recess 10 in the inner face of the face-plate 5.
The bolt proper, 11, is connected with a" bolt-carrying member 12, which is slidably mounted within the barrel 2, directly rearwardly ofthe face-plate 5,.and is provided with means 13 for operative connection with necting the bolt-carrying member and the knob-operated member are arranged for actuation by a suitable key, which may be inserted into operative position within the barrel 2 through key-holes 15, opening intothe barrel 2 at either side of the same.
When the bolt-carrying member is operatively connected with the knob-operated member, the bolt proper may be freely retracted; but when the means 13 are operated by a suitable key to operatively disconnect the bolt-carrying member and the knob-operated member the bolt proper is maintained in operative projecting position by a locking device hereinafter described. The knob-operated member 14 is controlled by a suitable door-knob 16, the shaft or stem 17 of which IOG enters the barrel 2 through the opening 1S at one side of the same and directly rearwardly of the knob-operated member 14.
In the preferred form of construction the bolt-carrying member 12 consists of a shell or body portion 19, which embodies a central web or shank 20, which is provided at one end with spaced fixed jaws 21, between which the bolt proper, 11, is received, and at the other end with a rectangular casing 22, within which are arranged the parts of the means 13 for operatively connecting the bolt-carrying member with the knob operated member. The bolt proper, 11, is preferably provided with a rearwardly-extending shank 23, which consists of a central retracted portion 24, which fits between the jaws 21, and a laterally-enlarged end portion 25, which extends across the inner ends of the jaws 2l and prevents longitudinal shifting or displacement of the bolt proper. The casing 22 of the boltcarrying member is provided with a detachable side portion 27, whereby the parts or elements of the means 13 for operatively connecting the bolt-carrying member with the knob-operated member may Ibe readily assembled in and removed from operative position. Said detachable side portion 27 may also be provided at its outer surface with an elongated groove or channel 2S, in which may operate a narrow enlargement 29, formed upon the innersurface of the half or member 4 of the barrel 2, and by means of the projection of the enlargement 29 within the groove or channel 2S the bolt-carrying member is effectively guided in its longitudinal movement and prevented against rotation within the barrel.
The means 13 for operatively connecting the bolt-carrying member with the knob-operated member consists in the preferred form of construction of a pivoted dog 30 and a loosely-mounted spring-actuated tumbler 31, which are both mounted within the casing 22 and are arranged for operation by a suitable key, which may be inserted into operative position through either of the keyholes 15. The dog 30 is pivotally carried upon a stud 32, which projects through a pivot-hole 33,formed approximately centrally of the dog 30, and said dog embodies at its rearward end a hooked finger 34, which is arranged for direct connection with the knob-operated member 14. Said dog also embodies a lateral projecting shoulder 35, which operates in a recess 36 at one side of the barrel member 4 to prevent retraction of the bolt-carryin g member when the latter is disconnected from the knob-operated member. The opposite end of the dog 30 is provided with two spaced projections 37, between which the inner operative end of the key adapted to the lock is received. WVhen the key is turned, the movement of the projection 37, which is engaged by the same, causes the oscillation of the dog 30 to engage the hooked finger 34 with the hook-operated member 14 or to relatively separate the same. The tumber 3l serves to temporarily lock the dog 30 in either inoperative or operative position with respect to the connection of the bolt-carrying member and the knob-operated member and is loosely mounted upon the stud 32 by means of an elongated opening 38, formed in said tumbler and through which the stud 32 passes. The tumbler 3l rests in flat contact with the dog 30 and is provided at a predetermined point with a iiattened enlargement or projection 39, which contacts with the inner surface portion of the detachable side portion 27 of the casing 22 and prevents relative separation of the dog and the tu mbler. The dog 30 is provided upon one face with alateral projection 40, which is angular in formation and projects within a cut-out portion 41, which is formed in the tumbler 31 and is of sufficient lateral dimensions to permit full oscillation of the dog when the angular projection 40 is clear of either of the spaced extensions 42 and 43, respectively, which are formed at one end of the cut-out portion 41, and in one of which said angular projection 40 normally rests when the dog 30 is in one position of extreme pivotal play. The extensions 42 and 43 in association with the angular projection 40 prevent the pivotal movement of the dog 30 when the same has been moved by the key into or out of operative connection with the knob-operated member. The tumbler 3l is normally maintained in operative position to lock the dog 30 against movement by means of an expansive spring 44, which is arranged to bear upon the stud 32 at one end and upon the enlargement 39 at the other end. The tumbler 31 is also provided at its end portion and adjacent the enlargement 39 with a curved end projection or shoulder 45, and this projection or shoulder 45 is engaged by the key to retract the tumbler against the tension of the spring 44 and disengage the angular projection 40 from the extension 42 or 43 of the cut-out portion 41 of the tumbler in which said angular projection may be positioned previous to the operation of actuating the dog 30. When the dog 30 has been actuated into alternate position, the spring 44 operates again to project the tumbler and cause the engagement of the angular projection 40 within the opposite extension 42 or 43 to again lock the tumbler in fixed position. In the operation of the key the inner surface portion of the respective end portion of the detachable side portion 27 of the casing 22 may be provided with a segmental groove 46, which may provide space for the operative movement of the key.
The knob-operated member 14 consists of a cylindrical body portion 47, which is slidably mounted within the barrel 2 and is provided at one end with a transverse slot 4S, with which communicates a lateral recess 49, formed in the same end of the body portion 47 The recess 49 is arranged to receive the hooked finger 34 of the dog 30, whereby said IOO IIO
hooked linger may be engaged with the end portion ofthe body portion of the nger 34 within the transverse slot 4S in the lateral movement through said recess 49. The body portion 47 is provided at the same end in which is formed the transverse slot 48 with an annular iange 50, and a coiled spring 53 bears upon said fiange at one end and bears at the other end upon two shoulders 51 and 52, respectively formed one upon the half or member 3 and the other upon the half or member 4 of the barrel 2. The body portion 47 may be provided at opposite sides with elongated grooves or channels 54, in which the shoulders 51 and 52 may be received in the reciprocation of the body portion 47. An annular connection device 55 is arranged within the barrel2 rearwardly of the knob-operated member 14, and by means of said device 55 the shaft or stem 17 of the door-knob is operatively connected with the body portion 47. The connection device 55iis rotatably arranged in the barrel 1 rearwardly of the body portion 47 and in registration with the knobshaft openings 18 and is provided with a squared bore which lits the rectangular formation of the shaft or stem 17 of the knob, whereby said connection device will be rotated upon the rotation of the knob-shaft. The connection device is provided upon one face with two oppositely-arranged shoulders 56,' which receive hooked porjections 57 on the rearward end ofthe body portion 47, whereby the body portion 47 will be reciprocated upon rotation of the door-knob in either direction.
The operation and advantages of my improved lock will be-*readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. The barrel 2 is inserted in a suitable chamber in the door in the customary manner, and the face-plate 5 is secured to the face'of the door to firmly secure the lock in position, the parts being assembled as shown in Fig. 2. With the parts in the position shown in Fig. 7 the hooked finger 34 of the pivoted dog 30 is in operative connection with the body porf tion 47 of the knob-operated member 14,
whereby the bolt proper, 11,1 which is normally projected into operative position by the spring-actuated knob-operated member, may be retracted by turning the door-knob in either direction. It will be noted that the function'ofthe loosely-mounted tumbler 31 is to lock the dog 30 inwhichever position shall be determined for the same by the actuation of the proper key, the angular projection 40 upon the face of thepivoted dog 30 riding alternately into the extensions'42 and 43 ofthe cnt-out portion 41 of the tumbler 31. The simultaneous actuation of the tumbler 31 and the pivoted dog 30 results in correctness of operation without sacrificing the positiveness of operathe formation of-but a single chamber in the `door or other lock-carrying structure.
l do notl desire to be understood as limit- IZO ing myself to the details of construction and arrangement as herein described and illustrated, as it is manifest that variations and modifications may be made in the features of construction and arrangement in the adaptation of the device to various conditions of use without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and improvements. I therefore reserve the right to all such variation and modification as properly fall within the scope of my invention and the terms of the following claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a lock of the class described, a bolt, an operating member, and means for operatively connecting said bolt with said operating member and for disconnecting said bolt from said operating member; said means comprising a pivoted dog provided with a projection arranged for engagement with said operating member and a tumbler which operates in connection with said dog to lock said dog against movement when said projection is in position of engagement or disengagement, said tumbler and said dog being arranged for simultaneous actuation by a suitable key.
2. In a lock of the class described, a bolt, au operating member, and means for operatively connecting said bolt with said operating member and for disconnecting said bolt from said operating member; said means comprising apivoted dog connected with said bolt and provided with a projection arranged for engagement with said operating member and with a shoulder arranged to prevent independent movement of the bolt when said projection is disconnected from said operating member, and a tumbler which is operatively connected with said dog and whereby said dog may be locked against movement when said projection is in position of engagement and disengagement.
3. In a lock of the class described, the combination with a bolt, abolt-carrying member and knob-operated means, of adog pivotally mounted on said bolt-carrying member and provided at one end with a hooked finger on one side adapted to engage said knob-operated means, and a laterally-projecting shoulder on the other side adapted to enter a re cess in the lock-casing when said finger is disengaged, and at the other end with two spaced projections adapted to receive the operative end of the key between them, said dog having on one face an angular lateral projection, and a tumbler provided with an elongated opening to receive the pivot carrying the dog and with a projection adapted to bear against the inside of the bolt-carrying member, said tumbler having its end adjacent to such enlargement provided with a curved shoulder and having a cut-out portion provided with spaced extensions adapted to receive the angular projection on the dog when in or out of engagement, and a spring normally retaining such angular projection in one or the other of said extensions.
