Be it known that I, WILLIAMT. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the'county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artists Sketch-Books, of which the following is a-'sp'eciiication My invention relatesvto .an artists sketchbook.

The objectof my invention is, first, to provide a book with one of the cover-leaves extended and adapted to be folded in when the book is closed. On theinnerfaceof the folding leaf is applied Water-colors, which are folded in when the book is closed and protected against soiling the adjoining book-leaf.

A second object of my invention is to adapt the book to the use of beginners or amateurs. This consists in placing figures in outline on the remaining pages of the book which are used, as Will be hereinafter set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,in which- Figure lis a perspective viewof the book in the open position with the paint-leaf extended. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the book in a folded position.

On the cover-leaf C is applied the different color-checks, d representing the space in which the various colors are applied and are separated by marginal spaces e fromhthe ad jacent checks. Y

D represents aflgurein outline to be painted, which in the present illustration is the outline of a pansy-blossom. Of course each page in the book will have a different figure in outline.

Beginners in painting are easily taught to shade and apply the colors, tol be donein the following manner: 'Acamels-hair" brush is moistened and rubbed over one of the colorchecks. It takes up the color and is then applied to the figure in outline in the same manner as other colors are applied. These outline-figures are also usefulin another way. Beginners are taught to draw outlines from the copy, and thus by imitation acquire the art'of drawing.

When the book is intended for amateur art ists for summer sketching, as tourists, no outline-sketches are placed upon the book-leaves; but the artist has his book'of colors in sim# plest and best form, as well as sketch-paper, all combined, it being exceedingly con'veni ient to use and quickly folded into position for transportation in a manner in Which the sketches can bepreserved without danger of being wrinkled or bent. Of course for. amateur artists the cover-leaves are madeof cardboard of sufficient strength to thoroughlyr protect the sketches.

Having described my invention, I claim-T- 1. An artist paint-book having a folding sheet containing a series of colors, secured `tothe outer marginal edge `of one of its covers adapted-to be folded in against the inner face of said cover-leaf, substantially as specified.

2. An artist paint-book having a folding sheet carrying a series of colors, each color being separated from its adjacent color by marginal spaces, said folding sheet being secured to the outerv marginal edge of one of the book-covers adapted to be folded in against the inner face of said cover-leaf, substantially as specified;

3. An artistzpaintf-book having a folding fsheet carryingfa'se'ries of colors, each color lbeing separated `from its adjacent color by marginal spaces, said folding leaf being secured to the outer marginal edge of one of the covers adapted to befolded in against the inner face of said cover-leaf, and figures in outline printed upon the book-pages, substantially as specied.
