TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, SHEPLY H. WALLACE, of' Pai-nessus, in the county of Westmoreland, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picks for Mining Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact deseription'tliereof, refereneebeing had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure -l is a. sideview of my improved pick, and
Figure 2 is a sectional view, formed by a plane passing longitudinally through the head and along the line of the handle. p
Like letters of reference `indicate like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction-ot' a pick for mining purposes, having a head and points so attached 'to the parts with which they are respectively connected, as to be easily removed for repairs, or that others, either new or old, may be substituted in lieu thereof. l l
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and mode ofoperation. v i v a is a pick-handle, to which is attached, by the scales b, a tenen, c, iitting into a mortise in the pick-head d, and-securely fastened therein by a screw, e, with its head countersunk in one side, and held by a screw-thread in the other side of the pick-head d. This head oZ is of any desirable size orpweight, and of any" known form in common use, except that it has removable steel pointsff, such points each having a shank or teznon, t, fitting into a corresponding mortise in either end ofthe head d, and secured there by screws e', with countersunk heads g and screw-threads, in like manner as above stated.
Riveting, or other equivalent mode of securing the head d on its tenon o, and the points f to the headl d, may be used in lieu thereof, or the shanks or tenons t' may be made round and chased and screwed into the ends of the head el, which is then bored and tapped for that purpose. But this mode of fastening the points is objectionable, for'the reason that the points are liable to become unscrewed by the prying motion which such picks in actual use are apt to receive.
Miners picks, it is well known, when in' use, have frequently' to be pointed or sharpened, which involves loss of time to the miner, and injury to the pick-handle in heating the head to remove and retit it; so much so that pick-handles are often spoiled by a few beatings. By my invention the miner can provide himself with one, two, or more extra points for each sized pick-head which he is'using, and with no other tool than a screwdriver, or hammer and punch, if rivets be used, change .or renew the points at pleasure. `The principal causes of delay are thus avoided. The same advantage exists when picks are from any cause broken-or otherwise injiired.
Pick-healls of dierentweights are also sometimes needed for ditl'erent purposes in mining, the work bearing in not" requiring so heavy a pick as knocking down. For this reason, and on account of the necessity of frequent sharpening, each miner, in order to work withrapidity, has to supply himself with a complete outfit of picks, which consists usually of six picks, weighing in the aggregate about thirty pounds. By myinvention- `pick-heads may be changed at pleasure, so as to admit of diierent heads being used onfthe same handle. I thus reduce the outfit required to two handles and three heads, and avoidvthe necessity which miners 'are often under l of sellingtheir picks at a considerable loss, on account of the diculty of carrying them when moving from onebank to another. l
Hence, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Making the head or points, or both head and points of picks for mining purposes, removable, substantially` is and for the purposes Ahereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I, the said SHEPLY H. WALLACE, have hereunto set my hand'in presence of* SHEPLY H. WALLACE,
Witnesses:
