To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM FULLARDJL citizen of the United States, residing at Colwyn,in the county of Delaware, State of Penn- 5 sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plate-Printing and Embossing Presses, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to an improvement in lo plate-printing and embossing presses; and it consists in means for imparting a quick and positive action to-ihe plunger of the impression-die.
It further consists in means for imparting a slow motion tothe die-plunger and then a quick action thereto.
It further consists of novel details of construction, allas will be hereinafter set forth.
The figure represents a side elevation of a '20 portion of a plate-printing and embossing vice, rollers, carriage, and die-chuck, none of which are shown, and which may be of any suitable construction and operated in any suitable manner, it being evident that other necessary parts to a press may be employed,
and as the same form no part of the present invention further description is deemed unnecessary at this time.
3 designates a power-shaft, carrying a gear 4, which meshes with the gear 5, the same 3 5 being mounted upon the shaft 6, to which is suitably securedfor example,by a featheran eccentric 7, which engages with a collar 8 on the rod 9, the opposite end of the latter engaging with a shaft 10,which is connected 0 with the lever 12,.mou'nted on an eccentric 11, which is carried by a shaft 13, which is supported by the standard 14 on -the frame 2, the opposite end of said lever having pivoted thereto a link'15, in which is journaled a threaded pin 16, wh'i ch has a nut 17 thereon, which also engages with the threaded pin 18, which parts 15, 16, 17, and 18 formatoggle, with which is connected the die plunger or head 19, the latter carrying the impres- 20 on the frame. Suitably mounted in the sion-block of the die and moving in the guide frame'isa idleror intermediate gear 21, which meshes with the gear. 5 and also with a gear 22, carried by a shaft 23, on which is the-cam 24.
25 designates an arm which is suitably connected with a die-plunger, in the present instance by being secured to the link 15, said arm 25 carrying the rollers 26 and 27, which are in contact with the cam 23, said arm 25 moving in suitable guides 28 on the standard '14 and is provided with a hook for engagement with the said arm 15.

which thus at the proper time depresses the rod 9 and also the lever 12 and with it the slow movement ofthe lever 12 the cam 24 will have traveled a distance and occupied a position directly opposite to that shown in the fig- 8 5 ure, and the arm 25'will be forced out in the direction indicated by the arrow, with evident results. When it is desired that no impression be made, by turning the eccentric 11, which carries the lever 12, so that theheavy portion of said eccentric is at the lower position the pivotal end of the lever is depressed and the opposite end, which carries the dieplunger, is elevated and with it"the plunger, so that when the lever 12 is lowered and the 5 arm 25 moved in the direction indicated by the arrow the said plunger will not reach the die-block.
In the drawing I have shown an arm 29, suitably secured to the cam 11 and having a rod 30 pivoted thereto, which is secured to a lever 31, pivoted to a suitable point, as 32, and is provided with the treadle 33, it being seen that by the proper movement of the lever 31 the cam is operated, though the said cam may be operated by hand, if desired, or by any other suitable mechanism.
The present application is a divisional application for a plate-printing and embossing press filed March 27, 1901, No. 53,022, and I do not therefore claim in this application the construction as therein described.
It will be evident that various changes may be made in this construction, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction as herein described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a plate-printing and embossing press, a die-plunger, a lever, connections between the lever and plunger, an arm attached to said connections, means for imparting movement to said lever, and means for imparting motion to said arm, whereby a quick movement will be imparted to said plunger.
2. In a plate-printing and embossing press, a die-plunger, a lever, connections between the lever and plunger, a rod connected with said lever, an eccentric contacting with said rod adapted to impart movement thereto, an arm attached to said connections, and a cam adapted to operate said arm.
3. In a plate-printing and embossing press, a die-plu uger, connections between said plunger and a suitable support, an arm suitably connected with said connections, a shaft, means on said shaft for imparting motion to said arm, a gear on said shaft, and means for imparting motion from a main gear, whereby the first-mentioned gear will move faster than the main gear.
4. In a plate-printing and embossing press,
with said rollers, a gear on said shaft, an in tel-mediate gear meshing with said gear, and a main gear meshing with said intermediate gear, whereby said first-mentioned gear-shaft is adapted to revolve faster thanthe said main gear.
5. In a plate-printing and embossing press, a die-plunger, a lever, connections between said plunger and lever, a main gear, means for imparting motion thereto, a main shaft, an eccentric thereon, a rod connected with said eccentric, a lever, an arm connected with said connections, rollers on said arm, a shaft, a cam thereon adapted to contact with said rollers, and a gear mounted on said shaft adapted to impart motion thereto.
6. In a plate-printing and embossing press, a die-plunger, a lever, connections between said plunger and lever, a rod connected with said lever, means for imparting movement to said rod, an arm connected with said connections, rollers on said arm, and a cam adapted to engage said rollers and operate said arm.
7. In a plate-printing and embossing press,
a die-plunger, a lever, connections between said plunger and lever, means for operating said lever, means intermediate said plunger and lever, whereby an additional motion of quick nature may be imparted to said plunger.
8. In a plate-printing and embossing press, a lever, a die-plunger, means for imparting motion to said lever, a yielding connection intermediate of said plunger and lever, and means for imparting proper motion to said connection, whereby an additional movement of quick nature will be imparted to said plunger.
