SPECIFICATION forming peut of Lettere retenu No. 702,610, aetea :rune-17, 1902.`
l l Application filed February 24, 1902. Serial No. 95,257. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL S. ALTMAN,a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,
in the county of New York andfStateof New art to which it appertains to make and`u`se"thely same'.
The object of this invention-is to provide an improved fastening device" for neckties whichA do not go around the neck and bymeans of which a necktie of any kind or class'may be quickly and conveniently secured in position, l
a further object being to so construct the fastening device of a necktie-which employs an ordinary shield as to economize in the construction thereof; and with these and ,other objects in view the invention consists in a necktie-fastening device constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in thefollowing specification, of which the accompaf'- nying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by thesame reference characters in each of the views, and in whichl'-A Figure lis a front viewofa shield of a necktie constructed according-to'my invention; Fig. 2, aback view showing y'the shield and the necktie thereof; Fignf,V a ffront view ofH thefdevice as shown inFi'g. 2, andFig.` 4 a front view showing certain deltailsf the construction. l d Y' I In the drawings formingpart of this specication I have shownfat'a anordinary necktieshield, .which is provided with'' two wings or laterally-directed side portions ai; and in the practice of my inventionIfform in the centralv portion thereof a longitudinal slotor opening a3, and the body portionf of said' shield is pro- `vided centrally of the bottom'thereof with a downwardly-directed projection a4, with the back side of whichis connected acollarlbutton hook @such as is usuallyemployed, and said hook is provided with pointed projections b2; which are passed through the part a4 and clenched, s'oias to hold said hook in position.
In forming a tie and connecting it with the shield a. I take a long strip c of suitable material and pass one end thereof through the slot or opening a3 from the back to the front of the shield a, and the upper end c2 of said the back of thetie below the slot or opening a3, as indicated by dotted lines (1,2 in Fig. 1,
and the other end of said strip b is then folded to form the bow or head d3, and said end of Asaidstrip is secured at d4, as shown in Fig. 2,
and the bottom portion of the part a4 of the A suppley ymental strip d is.then secured at one end to `stripis bent dow'nwardly'and backwardly and, 5 5 i shield a isV stitched thereto, as shown at e. l
The back port-ionof the tie when thus completed appears asshown in Fig. 2 and the front Yportion thereof as shown in Fig. 3, and
`thesaid tie in practice is connected with a collar-button in Vthe usual manner, and the wings a? of the shield iit under the turn-down .portion of the co`llar,-as customarylwith this class of devices, it being understoodthata tie made in this manner is-used only with a turn-down collar. As thus constructed it will be seen that the` tieproper consists of two parts c andd, andthe part d is secured to the `part Land-byj forming a tiewinthis manner the manufaeturethereof is rendered less eX-V pensive'and the timenecessary for the Inaking of a tieis'reduced.
Having thusfullydescribed my invention, i
what I claim 'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, `is-' .A made-upn'ecktiecomprising a shield ct havin g a central longitudinal slot and a downwardly-directed central portion, the body portion of thel tie consisting of a strip of suitable material, one end of which is passed through the slot in'the shield from the back to the front thereof and'folded backwardly over the top edge thereof and downwardly and the two ends of which form the bottom portion of the tie and asupplemental piece secured to the back of the tie below the slot in the shield and folded over aroundand secured to form the head of the tie, the downwardly-directed portion of said shield being secured tothe .back
of the head, substantially, as'vlshownland de scribed. Y
In testimony that I .elzmtheforegoing as my invention I have signed my narne, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 15thv day of February, 1902. e
